Ok, this is very strange.

I set the timing to 19 on my 98 SE, and it stays that way, with the TPS disconnected.

As soon as I reconnect the TPS the timing goes back down to around 5. Disconnect the TPS again and it goes back to 19.

I left the engine running and actually watched the pulley with the timing light, disconnected stays at 19, reconnect it and it moves back to 5. WTF?

Should be the top one. IIRC, it is the brown plug.

I'm trying to adjust my timing on my 98 SE.

I need to know which of the two electrical connectors by the throttle body is the TPS on the 98s. There are 2: one on top, one on the bottom. Which is the TPS?

Problem is, I *thought* I was doing it right, followed the revving procedures on SE-R.net, I pulled the bottom sensor (thought it was the TPS) set it at 19 degrees, then my idle jumped to about 1500rpms so I turned the idle screw down, and my timing went back to like 10 degrees.

TIA.

The TPS should be RIGHT on the TB, so the one that is NEAR it, is probably not the right one. And yes, it should be brown, atleast on the highport one it is.

Damn! Ok I had the bottom one pulled. I'm going back outside now to mess with it.

It's supposed to do that. That is why you do that rev/hold at 2500-3000 rpm thing. It locks the computer into the timing mode. In this mode the computer does not attempt to vary the timing. Once you reconnect everything the computer adjust the timing at will.

So I did everything correctly then and it's set at 19?

If it read 19 when you had it in the timing mode then Yes.

Ok, I think I get it now. If I'm correct you're saying you cannot just casually check the timing by hooking up the timing light. You need to lock the car in timing mode just to check it. Correct?

Oh how sad this is. I can do a cam swap in 2 hours yet I'm having all this trouble changing my timing. :(

Correct.

Dude you need to buy a haynes/chiltons manual. Even better a FSM.

I had one, but my friend took it from me and he's in upstate NY right now. :)

BTW, I just went for a spin with the timing at 19 now, definate improvement, quite suprised.
