Heres what I did - get some grips and have a friend hold the shaft. Twist hard, it will come eventually, but WARNING, you may damage the material on the knob, even if you use towel.

When I posted, it was more of an emergency state. I'm fine now, after about 4 whole flippin hours under my car. The exhaust had to be taken off of 3 hangers, and I had two other people besides myself. But, the shifter is awesome now, though it is a little stiff. Thanks for your help anyways.

but she likes it stiff...oh, wait...sorry. anywho, you can adjust the shift feel by loosening or tightening the main bolt which holds the shifter to the shifter linkage.

I just ordered the Pace Setter Short Shifter from JCWhitney. The Bushings are on their *** too (i heard you shouldreplace them when you put the short shifter in). I was wondering if you had tips for the installation of the shifter. I already got the knob off, so thats no prob. Thanks

It's pretty easy really. I have the PaceSetter Short Shifter, too. I have the pivot ball adjusted so that the shifter is as low as it can go. I LOVE it. Just be sure you use all the lube that they provide you. Also, if your car has been in Jersey for its life, then you might face some rust issues. There is a spring underneath which connects the shifter rod to a bracket. It provides tension to keep the shifter centered when in neutral and to bring it back to center during shifts. That spring rusted and broke on mine. I now go without the spring. Not a big deal, but if you like the tension, think about replacing the spring.
If you adjust the shifter as low as mine is, then you might face clearance problems with the exhaust shield underneath. The shield often needs to be bent into a W shape to allow for the shifter rod movement above the shield. Many folks, me included, have removed the shield completely. I've had it this way since I put in my AEBS header (2+ years). No problems.
