How the hell do I get the oil filter replaced? A filter wrench won't fit down there and still be effective and I definately can't twist it off.

my oil filter wrench is of the cap type. just fit it over the end of the filter, then stick a 3/8" ratchet in the hole and crank off the filter. works fine for me.

I always just stick my hand down there (with gloves on if the motor is hot) and twist it off. If its slippery, i wrap some sand paper around it for grip.

I am able to use a starp type wrnch just to break it loose...

worse case you can always do the screwdriver trick butthat is more messier than its worth.. but its an act of last desperation... good luck...

I use the same method. Works fine for me too.

i just use a screw driver and a hammer and give it a good wack knocks it loose, but make a little bit of a mess if its full.

so best to wait a few hours if the engine was running.

Very true. I have the wrench that fits over the end but it's at my fathers house. So I resorted to the channel lock method. Hey whatever works.

Look for the K&W brand filter cap. It doesn't slip off like that cheap shit from Autozone. Thats works with a 3/8th rachet. We have the advantage of not having to crawl under the car to get to the filter. i hate to see people complain about getting it up. Just turn the filter upside down and pull it up. Whats so hard about that espicallyif you don't have ABS?

Just be careful not to punch through the center threaded pipe on the oil filter mount. Somebody here busted theirs and now they need a new oil filter mount.

Odd, I've never had a problem with my '91's oil filter. Maybe it's the Mobil1 oil filters but I can remove it easily by hand. Then again, Mobil1s weren't available in 1991.

Maybe you guys are tightening it too much? Do you oil the seal of the filter before you install? Note: Mobil1s do not need to be pre-oiled.

That would be me! Yeah, I'm not a fan of the screwdriver technique. I'd say either get a cap type wrench or go with the tool at the store that completely surrounds the filter casing. My friend said it works everytime.

Yep, i also use a flat head screw driver and a hammer. Works good.

I use to losing it with my hand while the car is hot, and it took me like 20min to get the damn filter off.

I ususally just jack the car up and put on for thick rubber gloves. Fram oil filters have a rubber grip on the end of the filter fo its easy to get on and off.
