well i am not sure what type of oil to run in my sr20de. is it a good idea to stwich to a syntechic oil  i work at advance auto and i get a good deal i think that there is 10-30 in there now but moving to a 5-30 mobile 1 is that a good idea
Depends on the mileage of your vehicle. I started with 5w 30, then switched to 10w 30, now I've found that Mobil 1 makes a new race formula so I'm giving that a shot. All that I've used is synthetic though.
i use the cheapest oil i can find. if u have a high milage motor, i dont recommend synthetic unless u want major oil leaks

That's exactly why I'm kinda wary about switching to synthetic with my car. Anyone here have a high-mileage SR20 running synthetic?

Lots of people run synthetic on high milage cars. Mines at 124k, and I've been using mobil 1 since I got it at 88k. Yeah, some oil leaks sprung up, but there were on seals that were probably ready to go and needed replacing anyway.

Hmm..what are some seals I should check if I wanted to ever go synthetic? I have replaced my front main seal, timing chain tensioner and valve cover/spark plug gaskets..
some of the seals may be a b!tch to replace. such as the rear main seal. You might also wanna change both oil pan gaskets

I ran Castol Syntec for a long time (95,000+ miles) and then found out it was not a true synthetic base oil. So I checked it out and it's true. It's the most refined petroleum based oil available, but passes the liberal standards for synthetic. An oil can be labeled synthetic if it has some where around 42%+ synthetic additives. It's true! So I got angry and switched to Mobil One (pointless really). A true synthetic based oil is actually a smaller molecule and that's why it gets past seals easier. Porshce lists Syntec as the only oil one should use in the 993 & 996 turbos because it's a bigger molecule (know your Porshce engine design). My engine developed a leak on the front cover when I switched to Mobil One. No way in my life am I going to pull the engine to fix that (I would sooner swap it for a JDM), so I sealed it from the outside and all is perfect again. From my research and BMW shop/race days I can say that Mobil One is a safe bet. I hope this all makes some sort of sence. :)

"james vick", did you run Synthetic when the engine was new until present? A myth I hear once in a while is that engines are less likely to leak if you use Synthetics from low mileage (new) to present. I don't see how that would work, physics and all, but i'm interested in finding out more.
