: Sakerocket1's Motor swap--a success!

After 12 hours of sweat and grunting, along with 30 cans of pop and water to shed off the 90+ degree heat, the motor finally went in and ran!

Some highlights--upon pulling the motor out, it was determined there were in fact two holes in the block--one in the front and one in the rear near the starter---see photos.

Once the new engine was back in we had some running issues that resulted in a complete reworking of the vaccum lines---good thing Ben's car was there as a model! They also swapped out the coil, and the fuel rail from Nick's old car onto the new engine. The engine was still stumbling and detonating heavily. The timing was checked and so too were all of the sensors. As Nick was growing disappointed and Ben was suggesting a check of the fuel pressure and compression, someone suggested we check the MAF for proper voltage. After a few tests, it was determined that it wasn't properly gounded. Nick quickly grounded the wire, Jason fired the car and it smoothed out to a nice idle---as long as you didn't mind the leaking PS header:)

It was a long, fun and extremely hot Sat. But in the end a new engine was transplanted and Nick is now able to continue enjoying his baby.

P.S. Hey Nick--don't forget to order and send that TO bearing to Ben's house on Monday. Not sure if it matters, but mine is a 93' SE-R.

Glad everything worked out for you. Did you mark all your vacume hose ? I will be doing my engine swap probably in the next week or so . Any pointers?

Mark vaccum hoses? Why would we do that? That would take away from all of the fun:)

No---we didn't mark one of them. It truly was a good thing Ben's car was there so we could use it to match the ones up in Nick's car. I had never seen such a mad mess of wires, hoses and connectors---yuk.

10 hours??

You should be very impressed with yourselves. My DET swap took 10 days with the help of about five people including 2 mechanics.

10 days x 10 hours a day = 100 hours

Congrats.

I suggested that. :) Nick has several stray and often TIGHT wires around his engine bay, one of which was his MAF reground. In all of the work going on we happened to yank that extra wire out of the MAF harness causing it to read, instead of close to zero volts, more like battery voltage. :)

I really enjoyed it. It was really a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. Drain fluids, remove axles, radiator, all electrical connectors, intake, vacuum and heater hoses, shift linkage, and motor mounts and the engine is out. Simple. :) It's reall easy to figure out where all the connectors go back too. Vacuum hoses are a little tricky, but we just looked at my car and fixed them. 12 hours first time. My first clutch job took like 2 days and now I can do one in two hours. A few more swaps and who knows how fast I can do them... :)

I like the crowbar through the block to hold the crank in place in order to remove the flywheel :D

Doing pretty well, thanks. I need to get the NX back on the road for the summer though. It has a bad flexpipe and cv boot so it won't pass inspection. I'm also putting GC/AGXs on it. It should be ready in a week or so I hope.
