: Is it easier to miss a shift with a short shifter?
Storm88000 06-23-2002, 01:45 PM Matt4Nissan's post got me thinking about this.
 Some say it's harder to miss a shift, some say it's alot easier to with one because the shifts are so precise.
I know alot of people that did the 3rd to 2nd thing with the stock shifter, but no one personally that did it with a short shifter.
depends if the short shifter feels notchy.
BORNGEARHEAD 06-23-2002, 02:09 PM When I did my short throw, I also bought the shifter stabilizer bushing from Energy Suspension and filled my motor mounts. All I can say is "WOW". I have learned that you don't have to slam on your shifter to shift fast. That was where I would miss gears. Just shift quick and precise.
SE-Rican 06-23-2002, 03:14 PM I personally think it will cause you to miss shift. I feel that it throws your shift timing off. I found myself shifting before I had the clutch fully pressed in. I had a short throw and I took it off for the reason. I will stick with the OEM shifter!!!:D
Andreas Miko 06-23-2002, 03:27 PM Well I think you will miss more shifts. I have given up on quick shifters for SE-Rs since 95. They suck!!
Storm88000 06-23-2002, 04:47 PM Hmm well I just bought a B&M short shifter which is why I'm asking.

You just saved me $100.00 Andreas. Thank you!
Its311Pete 06-23-2002, 04:57 PM I think it is harder to miss a shift with a short shifter. I did replace the Shifter bushing when installing the SS.
If I could drive a classic with the ES shifter bushing I could make the call. Either way the $7 shifter bushing is the way to go!!
cossieturbo 06-23-2002, 05:05 PM I just chopped my shifter down about 7" and got a little more short shift. It took some time to get use to. See the deal is, short shifters speed up the throw (oh really?) and thus increases the speed of Baulk ring wear. When me and mine old blokes worked/raced BMW street & races cars, we found that short shift kits left little room for lazy drivers. You had to stay on your game all the time when shifting. It gets old. I for one am so bleedin happy with my chop job that I won't waste a dime on a short shift kit.

Black200sxSER 06-23-2002, 05:33 PM I hate driving other peoples SR's that dont have them..they feel like a truck...I have a shortened SMC adjustable throw shifter and LOVE it...
socalser1 06-23-2002, 05:54 PM where can i buy the es bushing?

Give Courtesy Nissan a call.
RollcageSR20 06-23-2002, 06:32 PM I had an SMC short shifter for a couple years in my 200SX, and it was alright. Definitely liked the shorter throws, but couldn't stand the notchyness. Then I realized I really liked the stock shifter coupled with the ES shifter bushing (on the NX). No way I will ever go back to a short shifter again, unless they made one with a really tall rod so I don't have to drop my right hand from the steering wheel to shift (a la BTCC cars).
Kelway 06-23-2002, 07:19 PM I have a custom made Stainless shift knob, that counterweights my PS shifter and have never missed a shift. I really think the weight of my shifter improves the effort of the throw, and keeps you from having to ram it, and it makes the shifter feel more substantial. I think it's perfect. I have the ES bushing, too, BTW.

i have my my short throw shifter for years..old SR guys might remember Grimmer Philips. I love it and an SR tranny without it
I dont like. then again, I have had the short throw in the SER since 93 or so. I just like the way the it feels. You feel so much "closer" to the car. Your best bet is to drive one with one and one without. See which one you like better. My guess is the short throw.
Rockwood 06-23-2002, 07:43 PM stock shifter with ES bushing for me, thank you.
all the short shifters i have used felt like mustange shifters (read: bad, notchy)
i dont need to "ram" my gears either, in fact, most people have commented on how smooth i shift, like i barely even touched the shifter. no ham fisted movements here, i think it is really the driver. i think the stock B13 and B14 SE-Rs have the best shifter around, honda's may be a little slicker and easier, but all my friend's have shifted their honda from 3rd to 2nd, as have many shortshifted SE-R pilots here.
So I mishifted..:D It had never happened to me before. And hopefully never will again. I don't know why I did it. Probably because I was overly excited that I was gaining on a WS6. Anyhow I have a cheapo Arospeed short shifter, without the bushing. I plan on getting the bushing now however. The ONLY reason I purchased this shifter was because I bought a Nismo shift knob and I couldn't use it with my stock shifter since I chopped it up.
Slow 96R 06-23-2002, 09:50 PM I have the Stealln SS, I do not have the bushing and I did it:o Cost me way to much money to get new cams, rockers, the works! :-( Should have brought a new money and 1K.
The throw is very very very close and very notchy, or difficult to go into 2 & 4 th gears!
Serban 06-23-2002, 09:58 PM I voted yes, I think it is easier to miss a shift if you're trying to shift faster than you can put the clutch in. I have an SMC adjustable short shifter, and just a few weeks ago, I adjusted it higher.

I have an adjustable one also. I want to adjust it higher and make the throws longer. I do not remember how to do that. Do you turn the ball up on the thread or down on the thread? Please tell me.
