When I drove my car yesterday.. I ran over a plastic bag. The plastic bag wrapped around my cv boot and cause it tore apart. The large amount of grease thrown around scared the shit out of me. At first I thought it was brake fluid leaking, but when I raised my car this morning.. it was my cv boot :( I am in Sacramento right now (approx. 2-2.5 hours) away from San Francisco. I am now hesitating if I should drive my car, but i have to because I have work tomorrow. Would it take 2-2.5 hours more of driving before it brakes? How much would it be to get it fixed? I have been stressing this week because first I lost my wallet with 300 bucks in it.. 2nd my checks took 2 weeks before my recipients got them.. so they charged me late fees.. now my car is fucked up. Is it still driveable or undriveable? Help pls :(

Ok, in the chance my old mechanic teacher will kick my arse, I will give you a little input on "getting away with it" for a short time. So it just happened? Many people drive a long long time with a torn boot. They have no idea there's a problem until they hear the clicking. One of mine blokes has a torn boot (I showed him) for over a year. Bad idea!!! You should have no problem driving for the 2+ hours with it torn, unless it's on dirt roads. :( I have been charged from $40-$100 to replace a boot. I do it myself now. I only buy boots made in the good old USA because they are thicker then the Nissan factory ones and last a lot longer. Hope this helps.

It will be fine...and just replace the whole axle instead of just the boot...you can find them rebuilt for pretty cheap.and you have brand new joints and boots inside and out...

What?? You don't need to replace the whole axle. Just because my battery dies, doesnt mean you need to replace the electrical system.

That has nothing to do with it...damn.are all you guys are on the rag or what.??

if you replace the whole thing...(around $60-70) you dont have to worry about the axle again..inner or outer boots...inner and outer joints. How many times do you like to fuck with stuff? One time in, bam its brand new...and it is years before you have to be under there for the same thing. ESPECIALLY if you are going to drive around with the joint exposed. It gets grit and dirt and moisture in there and ruins the velocity joint. Go ahead and be cheap if you want.Id rather replacve it all, and not dick with the boot.

At $75 for an entire new axle, why waste $40-50 on ONE boot, never ind the grease and the mess you have to go through packing that stupid thing.

Get an entire new axle from Pep Boys or something and forget about it.

Well, I have NEVER sean a rebuilt axle go for $60. Shit, junkyards sell used axles for $45 here. Just because the boot has been torn, does not mean your whole axle is fucked up. What you do is pull the axle, clean all the nasty grease off, then inspect the joint for damage. I have had a replacement boot on my G20 for three years now, with no problems. I bought the car with a torn boot, so who knows how long the guy drove it like that. Like I said, just because one little thing is broke, you dont need to replace the whole thing.

Never seen one for $59.99? http://www2.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker/?UseCase=C001&UserAction=answerRequiredQuestion&Parameters=%7C%7ELEFT+HAND+SIDE+%28SITTING+INSIDE+ VEHICLE%29&PageSync=3

Hey it's 6 to 1, half a dozen to the other. In my eyes, it makes no sense to repack a CV joint with miles on it (most cases >70,000) when you can have a NEW one for about the same price.

Just my $0.02.
