I have been searching for an SE sentra on the Net but alot of times they don't list the model but do list the VIN. Is there a certain one that indicates which engine the car has?

yes. the fourth letter of the VIN (from left to right) designates the engine. if it is a "B" then it is a 2.0L. If it is an "A" then it is a 1.6L.

good luck!

I have a 98 1.6 and a 92 SE-R. On the 98, the fourth letter is a (B), but on the 92 it is a (G). Does it change with the body style (B13) to (B14)?

Do you mean the fourth "LETTER" from the left, as in not including the #?? Cause I always thought it was the 5th from the left. Maybe I'm wrong.

On the cars I looked at the VIN's don't have an A or B in the fourth spot. A 2002 GXE has the Vin 3N1CB51DX1L503306. A 94 SER has the VIN 1N4GB32A0RC830513 So does this mean it changes with bodystyle or something. Thanks for reply

ok, I have my nifty haynes manual here to clean this mess up..........
this info only pertains to 95-99 B14 200SX and sentra(not b13 sentras se-r sam) models. counting from the left, the fourth digit is a letter. It is either an "A" or a "B".
A=GA16DE
B=SR20DE

This is always true!!!!!!!
se-r sam, i would check the fouth digit of your code. it should read "A" for GA16DE.

thanks, hope this clears things up..............

Just thought since I've been searching the net recently, that it might help others to have the right information about the VIN decoding. As far as B13's go, it's the fourth character from the left and a "G" annotates a 2.0, and an "E" is a 1.6

just go to www.kbb.com and plug in the VIN in the background check section. it will tell you the engine type and some other stuff.

This assumes, of course, that the original engine is still in the car and hasn't been replaced with something different.
