I'm trying to figure out if there is an alternative way to taking the bolt off the crankshaft pulley. If anyone has suggestion please let me know...It's a 1999 SR20DE and is off the motor on an engine stand...I'm also trying to get the front cover off but seems that I need the pulley off first.
Also if you know the answer to this question. I'm seperating the block and head and got all the bolts out...do I need to take the timing chain guides out as well inorder to take the head off? From what I see it seems like it...anyways TIA.

Huh? Just use an impact wrench.

But if you do not have an impact wrench... This method is used if the head is already off the block.
(WARNING THIS IS MAYBE NOT THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS BUT IT WORKS)
Cut the end off a 2x4 peice of wood and cut it so it will fit inside the cylinder on top of the piston. Rotate to engine so that the piston is low enough in the cylinder that the chunck of wood sits flush with the top of the block. Set a longer 2x4 across the top and have a buddy hold it down. While your buddy is holding it down wack the end of your wrench (preferably a long breakerbar) with a hammer. This will get the bolt off and should not damage the cylinder or piston if done carefully.
As far as getting the head off goes. There are three outer bolts, IIRC, that also have to be remove before the head will budge.
Also the head is fairly well "guled down with silcone gasket and will need some convincing to come off. Other than that the chain guides do not have to be removed to get the head off. Assuming that the 98 is the same as the 97.
Do you have an FSM? If not get one.
