: JWT valve springs and retainers

Has anyone ever bought and use the JWT titanium valve springs and retainers they offer? What are the thoughts and experiences with this set up? What set up works best?

I remember SCC (Sport Compact Car) doing a review on them. What gains can I expect to see upon using this on a stock SR20DE or on a SR20DET. Is this a recommended mod?

I am just looking for more ways of increasing the performance of my DE and DET. I know that the DE will soon have to be replace with a DET or a VE (preferred).

The car(s) will mostly be run on a track or road racing. Once a while maybe visit the local 1/4 mile strip to time it or just to have a time slip. :) Maybe a weekend street warrior here and there.

Thanks!

the valve springs will do nothing for performance, in fact it may decrease performance because it takesmore power to compress the stiffer springs. What it is needed for is if you get high lift aftermarket cams. The stock springs are limited to around 10 mm lift and after that, they tend to float at high RPMs.

My bad! My DE does have an S3 cam now. My DET is stock but might have an S3 or S4 really soon.

When Shoe was referring to high lift aftermarket cams, I'm sure he was referring to the JWT C series cams. Not the S series. The S series don't require the upgraded springs/retainers.

true, although I heard that a car picked up 2 hp with the installation of the valvesprings with S4 cams, I think i read about it on the mailing list a while back

The spring valve and retainer will increse 3-4 horsepower with the S4 cams cause S4 cams have Valve flow.

Save your money. The springs/retainers are really only needed to prevent float and reduce valvetrain weight. The S3/S4 work fine with the stock springs and retainers. The reduced weight will be offset to some degree by the stiffer springs. It's a expensive mod that is only really needed with the C series cams.

OK, a lot is being said that is mostly correct.

Rob Cadle dynoed his car (don't know which cams, but not the C series) with the springs and retainers and he gained 2 hp.

The JWT springs are only moderately stiffer than stock. But, they have great harmonics that allow them to keep the valves from floating without high rates (like most solutions).

This is not a mod that you would want to get as a stand-alone solution. If you are getting C series cams they are requried. If you are thinking about getting C series cams, they do have some benefit and your car will be ready for the new cams. But, if you just want to get them because they sound like a cool mod, spend your money elsewhere first.

Yep, that's true

If u not going C cams, don't get the spring valve or retainer.

If u are planning to spray alot of Nitrious, the spring valve and retainer are also good for this

Bingo!!! That's what I was looking for. I'm contemplating on what to do with my DE. I was thinking of taking the S3 out and install it on my DET. In replacement I didn't know if I should go back to stock cam. So I guess I'll be looking into the "C" cams and the valve springs and retainers.

Sound advice as well! I guess I can always save the money and spend it on a VE or DET.

Thanks to everyone else that gave a reply as well!

I am not sure if you are saying you want the C cams for the DE or DET. I don't know how well the C cams works with a turbo. Be carefull of too much overlap and this causing reversion. I hear that one of the C cams actually idles better then the S4's but gives better power. I vote VE but anyway. How much do C cams, springs and retainers cost?

Good Morning Steve! :D

I want the C cam and valve springs and retainers for my DE. But I can always just save the money and go the VE route. I'm just playing with some ideas right now. I'm not sure how much it would cost me to buy all of them. I'm going to call JWT today to give me a ballpark number.

IIRC, the cams go for 560 and the valvespring/retainer set is $600:eek: also I think that S3's have 260 duration, the S4's have 266 degres, and the C1's have 264, so they will have less overlap, but due to the valvespring/reatieners, they can use much, much more lift and faster profiles
