Hi all ,

I am from Estonia and I have a small trouble with my pulsar GTI N14 , which is really annoying me ...

The most essential things for safety driving don`t work at all. These are speedometer and odometer.

I suppose that this speed sensor / pinion is responsible for my misfortune .

But I must make sure before I buy a new one .

How to check an old one ? What happens, if I just connect electric drill to one side and voltmeter to another side . ? Will the resistance of this sensor change ? Does it make any sense ?

If both are not working it's might be the dash.

I'm not sure if the sensor is electric or mechanical but if it's electric the easiest way to check it would be to hook the car up to a laptop with consult software and see if it's sending a signal to the ecu (I think this would work if it's mechanical also but I'm not sure) Or you could pop it out and test it with a digital volt meter. I would imagine the resistance would change if you spin the gear fast enough.

Yep . So did I . Stand-by resistance is about 300 Ohm`s . I thought that my electric dril would be fast enough to spin speed sensor , but it`s resistance didn`t change at all . No luck

Hmm ... What could be wrong with the main dash ?

Maybe thats the problem then. Only thing is I don't think it would cause the tachometer to stop working. The sensor for that is in the distributer or on the bell housing (I forget which)

Well the electronic ones just go bad after time. It is a documented problem (it happened to me) with the p10 dashes. If you check out G20.net a lot of people have problems with the tach dying and it's fixable by replacing the dash.

I don't know about your pulsar, but on my 93 Sentra, I found the exact same issue and figured out it was a loose connector on the passenger's side. You don't have to disassemble anything to get at it either. Just look for 3 connectors on the passenger's side of the engine compartment, right next to the wheel well. They should be stacked, one on top of another. Make sure those are plugged in. I'll get a picture of mine if I can find one.

:squint:

:eek2:

Actually i didn`t mention tahcometer. But anyway , thanks for HELP !;)

Maybe smb else knows how to make sure that speed sensor is working normally ?

Seems that solution is coming .

A small picture or scheme would be appreciated .

Speed sensors definitely go bad and a drill should be able to spin fast enough to register something.

Hi all !

First of all , thanks everybody . Your thoughts and suggestions were useful .
At last , after buying a new speed sensor i `ve got a working speedometer
