I bought a 96 SE-R off of a friend that he turbo charged. Yesterday, I wasn't driving too hard, but I mis-shifted from 3rd to 2nd. It immediately went to 9 grand, I clutches, shifted into 3rd, and then 2nd. When I came to a stop, the engine died and would not restart. It seems to turn over alright, but it will not start. After trying to turn it over for 20 seconds or so, it seems to get stuck on something. But soon it turns over again. Any idea what could be wrong or how much damage is done. There seem to be no leaks of any kind. Thanks in advance!

Take off the valve cover. 99% chance that you tossed a rocker arm. It's very common to do that on an SR20 when it's overreved. Remove the cam, replace the rocker arm and shims, and you'll be good to go. Hopefully you didn't damage your cams when the rocker was bouncing around under the valve cover.

Do some searching on the forum, and you'll see a bunch of posts on this exact issue.

What is frightening is that is pretty much exactly what I was going to say.

I am actually absorbing mechanical knowledge through sheer osmosis.

Listen to Chris, and welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear man, hopefully it's nothing serious.

If all else fails and your cams are busted I have I lowport intake cam ~106k miles and a highport exhaust cam (same thing as lowport exhuast) with ~112k miles.

I'll be more then glad to sell them to you :biggthump

Would turning the engine over trying to crank have caused more damage? I tried to start it 4-5 times.

Only if the rocker was jammed in the cams which I doubt.

Go pull the valve cover.

This forum is ridiculously helpful.

Not only do you get expert advice from Chriscar, but you have a forum member who is ready to sell you pre-owned parts to fix the car if you screwed up your cams. I love this joint. :D

Well, I took the valve cover off, and the worst has happened. Every single rocker was broken; both cams are scarred pretty bad. One valve looks a bit low, but it could be ok. I lost one of the valve retaining clips (well half of it). The valve cover is cracked too. I think dropping and cleaning out the oil pan and rebuilding the head is what needs to be done. Now I need to consider cost and possible upgrades due to this. What are your thoughts and ideas?

You must have spun that engine to the moon. A local friend did the EXACT same thing a few weeks ago. Tossed nearly every rocker, and one keeper. I had a spare head and supplied him with all the rockers, shims, retainers and a keeper. He installed the parts, and it runs as good as new. Is the valve that looks low the one that lost a keeper? If so, I doubt you need to rebuild the head.

Expect to pay in the neighborhood of $100 for either a complete head, or the individual parts from someone on the forum, including set of highport cams.

Fish around in the top of the head with a magnet for shims, busted rocker fragments, etc. and definitely drop the lower pan because there's probably some tasty morsels in there as well.

Wow that freaking sucks man :(

I do have a spare Valve Cover that I need to get rid of too. If your interested, I can post some pics of both the cams and the VC.

Even though I would like to sell my low port intake cam, I do suggest that you find a high port intake cam for the extra WHP :biggthump

What I do have available to buy:
- Low Port Intake Cam - 106k Miles
- High Port Intake Cam - 112k Miles
- Low Port Valve Cover - 106k Miles

I can sell them all to you for $100 shipped :biggthump

Not really, I am more about people being happy then doing business ;) :biggthump

There was a guy in Forced induction performance parts parting out two bluebird motors. I was going to buy one of the heads with new valves for $120 plus shipping. I believe he still has it. http://www.sr20forum.com/forced-induction-performance-parts/207234-2-complete-bluebird-motor-partouts-2.html

Really? Wow! I could fix this thing for around $100. Where should I look for rocker arms, etc? IS the highport intake cam from earlier sr20 models? Does it help a lot, and will I need a retune on the turbo setup with it?

shit i know how that shit works the rock arm.. pain in the ass!

No retune needed for the cam, and yes it's s definite improvement. The low port cam sucks.

Put a Wanted ad in the wanted section, and you should be able to score what you need.

The turbo head posted above is a GREAT deal, but swapping the head is a big job. Also, you'll need a new head gasket and head bolts, so figure that into the price of the job.
