I've read about a revised timing chain tensioner, what's the part # and the procedure for installing one. ( I know where it's located, I just want to make sure I don't drop time) Is it necessary, mines quite noisy at start-up. Thanks.

I know any Nissan dealer will be able to get the right updated unit. That's all they sell now. It's not too hard, just have to remove the valve cover, oil filter, prime the new tensioner with some motor oil and be careful installing the 2 small nuts. Use "Lock Tite" on them. I think the procedure was somewhere in this site. http://www.se-r.net/site_index.html
Replace it bloke. Mine started getting a bit noisey and all's better now.

There are at least 3 different variations of the timing chain tensioner for our cars.

The first one is the original, the second has what appears to be larger oil chambers (noticable from the outside) and a stamped gasket, and the third, which surprised me, looks like the second, but the teeth on the plunger are nearly twice as fine.

You don't need to remove the valve cover. Also, make sure you cover the oil filter hole. You don't want those nuts dropping down there!

I used Zotz garage for the tensioner... http://www.zotz.com/nissan/proc/sentra_se-r/sentra_se-r_tensioner.htm

He has pretty good instructions about the tensioner and some other servicing routines for the SR20's.

Good luck,

Thanks for the info. I'll replace mine next oil change. I just wanted to double check before I got myself into a big mess.

Did I play it too safe by removing the valve cover and releasing the tensioner from the inside? Does the new tensioner just unsnap its self when you start the engine? This I need to know bloke.

Yes and yes. Just don't over tighten the tensioner when reinstalling like I did. Now I have another oil leak to contend with.
