What is the difference between aluminum and copper gaskets? Can I make my own gaskets? Any recommendations?

Thanks, Steve

All the metal exhaust gaskets I've seen have some sort of crimp or ridge in them around the outside, where the seal is actually done. Its not very big, but I don't think you could make your own and have them seal correctly unless you could form them with this ridge/crimp.

just use a 2000+ gasket - it is already metal and retails for about $17

If you have headers, I know the copper gasket from Mr. Gasket (Summit and Jegs) has a bigger port so it helps headers. I trimmed a bit more out of mine as copper is easy to file down. I hear the 2000 gasker has a good sized port also, but have not seen one to confirm this. The big difference in gasket material is, the Aluminium gaskets tend to be a bit softer, but with a lower melting point. Making your own gasket would be like shooting yourself in the foot. Just a lot of time thrown out the window.

I'm asking because I need 3in 3bolt gaskets for my exhaust and no one has copper left, only aluminum. They are the same price though. Any thoughts?
