i need to separate the housing so i can slip the new boot in. per hayne's manual, there is a clip i need to take off so the housing will come off. i looked at the pix and i couldn't find the clip the manual is referring to. it is quite bigger than the one in the middle. can u guys tell me how i can separate this one? thanks.

Snap ring pliers will come in handy here - it's the thick snap ring - use the pliers where the X is.

Uh, that snap ring is the stopper that prevents the shaft from going IN too far. Removing that won't allow the axle to come apart. You have to put the lot in a vise and use a slide hammer or something...
I usually disassemble the inner and put the boot over the length of the shaft.

I didn't even notice that was the inner - isn't there a snap ring on the other side that has to be removed to slide the bearing pack off?
ALWAYS search the technical how-to section first!!!

Also do a search on G20.net as there's a good article there as well.

That's an outer... The inners have the three lobed semi-ball with needle bearings. That thing has a big ID snapring you need to remove to get the lobe-thing out. Once that's out, then there's a snapring on the far side of THAT to get the lobe-thing off. Once you have THAT off, then you can slide a new outer boot down (as long as you don't have the damper thing on still, then you'd have to pull that off first too...)

That's what I meant when I said "inner", the inside of the outer portion. I was exhausted from staring at my car all day.

so basically, leave the c-clip and just hit it hard with a hammer? yes. this is the outer.

i did searched and read the "how-to" before i took off driver axle, otherwise, it wouldn't get me this far. (#7) it seems like he took off the cv while the axle was still connected to the tranny?

The "cup" is held in place with a clip just like the one that holds the driver side axle in place:

It took quite a bit of effort to separate. :)

That's the route I took. If someone has an easier way, I'd like to know for future reference.

thank you all for your help. i was able to unpacked and packed the cv boot. there is NO circular clip to take off to remove the housing. i simply pounded that sucker off and found out ther is a c-clip at the end of it (just like the inner part).
