: best oil to use
greendot 06-28-2002, 06:35 AM i have already tried the search, so forgive me if this topic has been talked about before.
since i just passed the 60k miles on my b15 sentra sr20, i want to ask you original and true sr20de guys on advise to prolong my cars life. i change my oil as schedualed, and have replaced my brake oil. what oil is recommended for use? should i just stick with reg oil, or switch to synth.
also, i rarely push my car, and actually baby it most often.
thanks
Bowlcut 06-28-2002, 09:33 AM actualy by babying your car you are probaly leading to its death. you need to rev that thing to make sure the oil pressure gets high enough to make sure the cam oiling tube are clear. do a search on sludgeomatic on the list and you will understand why. red line that thing atleast once a day to really clear it out. as for dino or synth, thats up to you and how much you want to spend. i dont use it cause the dang automatic doesnt command synth. also make sure "as scheduled" means 3000 miles, not 5000+ like my dad's mazda
With 60k on it, I'd go with 10w30 Mobil 1. Or if you really want to beat the piss out of it:D get some 15w50 race formula.

What's best for SR20s is regular oil changes, dino or synthetic.
In your case, just go with the owner manual's recommended weight: 5W30.
pearl2000 06-28-2002, 03:46 PM i live in hawaii, so freezing the damn engine isnt much of a problem here. so i throw good money away and buy royal purple 5w30. ive tried amsoil and mobil 1 before, i prefer the RP. peace.
Toolapcfan 06-28-2002, 05:36 PM As I mentioned in the other oil related thread, there was a write up in the newest Hot Rod about synthetic versus dino you should check it out. They mention the typical stuff about why synthetic is better, but what said more was their dyno testing which showed about a 10HP increase with synthetic over dino. I use Synthetic because if you don't buy the expensive stuff it isn't going to cost you that much more a year than dino, at least in my opinion. I figure it's worth it for the added protection.
NonSER 06-28-2002, 05:57 PM 10HP? I don't believe that? Synthetic over Dino? No way. Maybe less then 1hp. Synthetic oil offers longer protection and a peace of mind. In no way does it guarantee engine's life extension. Reg. maintenance helps with that though.
SmoothDaddyFig 06-28-2002, 07:57 PM I use 0w 30 Mobil 1 Synthetic.
Why? Cause everybody is scared of it and I want to see how long it lasts.
The engine runs more free. So far its been 2,500 miles, one dyno, redline everyday and no problems.
scmser 06-28-2002, 08:36 PM I used 0w30 once. I personally thought the motor ran like shit. Probably placebo and my fear of the 0w30. 5w30 synth is fine.

i do change my oil at 3k miles, sometimes sooner. i also change my manual tranny gear oil every 4th oil change. already flushed the brake line when i installed my brembo x-drilled and braided line. i guess i should start gunning it, just a little bit.
i used synth on my older altima, and never noticed a diff. just really curiouos what other sr20 owners are using.
NissanGuy01 06-29-2002, 12:14 AM i ran 0w-30 on my old 92 Sentra SE with the 1.6liter. I ran that for a good 2 years and never had any problems than a SLIGHT oil leak. not enough to make a difference on the oil stick, but enough to make a difference on the garage floor.
Texasbangerz 06-29-2002, 08:41 AM i switched to mobil 1 in my bluebird/altima and it became much smoother and accelerated quicker...
Storm88000 06-29-2002, 12:49 PM LOL. 10hp gain from dino to synthetic? Maybe on a jumbo jet.
Black200sxSER 06-29-2002, 02:12 PM I saw the dyno run on Hot rod TV or something like that.they replaced ALL the fluids with Synthetics..they used Royal Purple motor oil, tranny fluid, and rear end gear oil...it was an almost 10 hp increase to the wheels...
MaddMatt 06-29-2002, 02:26 PM 10 hp from going synthetic? Only on Planet Naji.
I prefer Mobil1 over Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple for one very simple reason: I can get 5 qt jugs of Mobil1 at my local Wal-Mart for $17. You have to find a dealer for the other stuff, and when you do, bring your wallet. For what the vast majority of us do with our cars here, Mobil1 is more protection than you'll ever need. After 130,000 miles, I could still easily see 98% of the factory crosshatch marks on the cylinder walls of the 4G63 in my Eclipse. I'll never use anything else.
TUNED200 06-29-2002, 06:17 PM mobil 1 15w50. i bought it, and thought of returning it, because i havent heard anything about it. i plan on beating the living sh^t out of the det, so i GUESS? i should keep it?

15W50 is a good idea for DET. Most SR20DET/RB26DETT tuners in Japan use 10W50 oil. If I had a DET, I will be using the Mobil 1 15W50.
SR20DEe 07-17-2002, 01:31 PM green i run mobil 1 10w30 redline mt-90 and water wetter. i am @ 47000 miles in my 01 SE.. sure i redline my car once or twice everyday.... doesnt every body.. ;) i have some light valvetrain noise but other than that my cars running strong as an ox.. ..
i change my trans fluid every 15000 miles.. oil 3000, coolant 30,000 i may start doing the fluids more frequently due to the summer heat and 6700rpms high temps
any 10w30 in summer 5w30 in winter. shouldnt hurt a thing. ;)

Thats a recommendation for all climates - if you live somewhere where it never gets really cold, then you might as well run 10W30.
I've been running mobil 1 10w30 for quite some time in my car, even in really cold weather (it was probably around 20F one morning on the way to school a couple years ago) without any problems.
