Hi everyone. I'm the proud owner of a 95 200SX SE-R that I bought just a few months ago. I have a few questions that I'm hoping you guys can help with:

Spark plugs - I thought these were supposed to be NGK platinums but when I checked the other day I have Bosch plugs (and I don't think they're platinum). What am I losing performance-wise?

Paint - My car's Super Black. Is this clear-coated?

Toronto SE-R owners - Are there any out there? I've actually seen 2 since February but they seem very rare.

Thanks for the help.

Hi, yeah all SE-R came with NGK Platium spark plugs, you need to get those Bosch plugs out, the NGK's are so much better, and your car will run a lot better. BTW bump the timing up to 17-18 deg, and yes your car came with a clear coat on it. Well SE-R's are kinda rare, you probally not see to many running around, welcome to the few and the proud SE-R's here.

Thanks bl200sx.

Bumping the timing up huh? Would that mean a changeover to a higher octane gas? What would be the result? Better pick-up?

humm.........not sure about using higher octane gas, if you were to bump timming up, maybe someone can chime in on that one, but you can gain some hidden hp doing so. Most members on here says it seems to help out.

Yeah you have to use higher octane gas when bumping the timing or else it might detonate. Some people claim to have gotten as much as 5hp from this FREE mod.

Thanks for the replies.

I believe the plugs should be PFR6B-11 (22401-27N66) and at my local Nissan dealer they cost $19 Canadian each.

I was in an auto parts store the other day and they were selling platinum NGK plugs (G-Power I think). The look-up guide said that these plugs were OK for the car. My question is, is there a difference between the OEM plugs that retail at $19.00 vs. the NGK G-Power platinum plugs selling for $4.00?

Also, NGK's site says that the plug should be a PFR5B-11 and it should be gapped at 0.044 (whereas my Haynes manual says 0.035)???

Thoughts?

Consider buying from Couertsy Nissan for your parts. Also, go to www.se-r.net and you can find other dealers to buy from. I would get the OEM Nissan plugs. That does not mean that the G-power platinum are not the same. Buy one and take it to the dealer and compare. They may be the same. It's kinda funny. Way back in the 80s I tried a variety of plugs on my 72 510. Nothing worked as well as the OEM NGK nissan plugs.

As far as the type. The standard spark plug is BKR6E, Colder is the 7E and hotter is the 5E. Gap is set at .8-.9mm or .031-.035in. Some areas (ie cold climates recommend the different heat range for the area. Do not assume just because it is cold that you need the cold plug. It has to do with driving conditions (city, highway) type of gas in the area. I would go with the standard unless I was having problems. My mom does a lot of city driving of less then 10 miles. I put the hotter plug in hers IIRC. I asked the dealer and he helped me out.

Thanks 98sr20de. I might just try the G-Power plugs.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be too many options for Nissan parts in Canada. Courtesy Nissan replied to my e-mail about the plugs and I would have bought them if the shipping wasn't $30 FedEx (although this is obviously out of their control).

Can any Canadians suggest where to buy parts here?

Thanks.

If you're going to get new plugs just go all out and buy Denso Iridium Plugs. They will cost you about the same price as the oem ngks. I have used both Bosch Plats regular and Plat 4's and NGK Plats, neither gave me the smooth idle I get from my Densos.
