i have never seen a how to on prothains so here is mine. i have done no less than 6 prothain installs and never got the idea to do a write up.......i didnt have any prothains this time but jen36 was selling his old mounts to another forum member and i decided to remove the old rubber to make it easier....i also sand blasted and painted so i took pics of how i did this useing only 3 basic hand tools........i didnt cheat and use any of the hydro presses at jen36's shop:rofl:

this is how you start out. BFH, 2 chissels, and your old mount.

you need 2 differant types of chissels. one normal style and a wedged shape chissel.

take the normal style chissel and place it between the mount and the metal ring and pound away

now take the wedged chissel and go to town. this will releave the tension holding the metal sleeve and rubber mount in.

my method takes less than 5 minutes per mount. burning the mount out does nothing but make the mount to hot to handel....and you still need to remove that metal sleeve after. after your done with the wedged chissel you can literaly tap the rubber and sleeve out with the handel of a screw driver.

now i cant say i have ever installed the prothain inserts without useing a hydro press. but id imagine that putting some grease inside the mount then lowering a car on top of it will do the same thing as a press.


edit: adding terms to aid in searching. prothain how to, install prothains, replace engine mounts. install prothane, prothane, replace prothane.

I concur, I have done the exact same method, with my own. Great post with no smokey fumes.

:rofl: i need to get a picture of the hydro press room.............it looks like sr20 mount death yard. there are remains of engine mounts all over the place lol

I do the same thing but with an air hammer. Easy stuff man.

You also don't have to let off toxic fumes into the atmosphere. Nice.

Just note to be careful on the passenger side mount. The metal is different and can crack easily. I had done this on 2 mounts before they cracked. Its was cut out on the 3rd.

None the less a good idea. Surprised someone didn't do a write up on this before.

I've installed a few sets! a simple bench vice can press the mounts in easily if you grease them! A tip is to remove the brass sleve in them! then put the sleve back in.

Yeah... actually all you need is some WD40, hand soap...etc. Coat and press. Works well...

And the crazy thing is... when you think that mount is pressed in sideways.. and POP. It's straight. WOOP WOOP! :biggthump

funny, i did the same method with my mounts and a buddy's too. although it did take us a bit longer, but all was the same. great write up, easy understanding.

thats what i was thinking. but i didnt just want to take it apon myself to just post it in there.

once jensen gets prothains for his new nx ill add that to the write up.......mybe try my hand at installing a prothain not useing a hydro press lol.

no press needed, I did it with a nib clamp and alot of lube.

also, on the top one, on the timing cover. make sure you do not scratch the mount with the screwdriver. I've seen it crack with a small scratch

Yeah don't even need anything hydrolic clamp or vice is fine!

Another tip is to make sure you have somthing like flat timber/metal to even out the pressure otherwise the mount will go in cocked and it will pop back out.
