: Timing problems

Well I went to go check the timing on my NX today and came across a few problems figured someone on here could have some insight to.
First of when I disconnected TPS my idle jumped up to 1500rpm.
the car normally idles at 800.
I then did everything thing I had to do, rev it 3 times past 3000 to set timing mode and went to check the timing for the first time and it was past the 20 mark! I’m guessing about 25 or so.
this is odd because I haven't touched it since I got the car and I has been running like real champ.
The car did have lots of power and really snapped your next from 5000 rpm up.
But now that I set the timing back to 19 that snap is gone and the car feels sluggish.
I’m assuming that the timing isn’t right due to the 1500 rpm idle speed but that’s just my guess.
The question is, is should I go back into timing mode and set my idle to 800? But then won’t this make my idle with the TPS connected super low?
Any help on this would be great.
TIA
Dan

I'm no expert, but I know the idle has to be less than 1000 for the timing to show up right. Maybe the car wasn't warmed up good. I know when I set mine, the guy in the car would have to rev it every now and then to keep it from dying, and the marks would jump way up.

well i tryed to make sure the car was nice and warm i went for a good 20min drive with some good hard driveing to go get some gas before i did the timing.
i also did the 2 min at 2000 rpm thing to make sure the oxygen sensor was warm.
there has to be some sort of idle problem...
anyone???
TIA

Adjust your idle first, then set the timing.

just follow the procedure for setting your base idle. from what i understand, the tps works to prevent your car from revving too high or stalling. thus, if your car's base idle is at 1500rpm, then the tps adjusts it downwards. if your base idle is at 500rpm, it'll adjust it upwards. if your idle is way low - sub 500rpm - you car will stall when you pull the tps off. i hope this all makes sense to you. so the idea of adjusting the base idle is to get your car to run at 750-800rpm without having the tps's interaction.
once your base idle is set, then timing should be a snap. also, i don't know what kind of timing gun you have, but if it is one that has an adjustable dial, make sure it's set at 0.

As the engine speed increases, the ecu advances the timeing more and more. Thats why your set your BASE timing, your timing at idle. My idle was kinda high and to get it to drop down I put my car into gear and back into nuetral, and for some reason that drops the engine speed down to where it should be. Try checking your timing again, but this time at idle, i bet it will be pretty low.

now its up to 19 and the car has its kick back.
thanks for the help.
next step spec clutch...

okay, I'm new to this, and I've read as much as I can, but I'm still confused...what the heck is a timing gun, timing light or whatever you use. and how do I use it. I've read several things. and I did go to SE-R.net

the timing gun is essentially a strobe lightthat has a sensor you attach wire leading to the spark plug of cylinder #1. each time the spark plug fires, the strobe light flashes. basically you aim the gun at a pulley which has dashed marks on it. there's also a needle that points to the top of the pulley. each dashed mark represents a certain degree of advanced timing. you can adjust it by rotating your distributor. most people run between 17 and 19 degrees advanced, depending on the fuel you use.

ooh, okay. and they'd have these at autozone, or pepboys?

yup, i believe most/all auto parts store have timing lights. even sears carries them.
