ok, let me tell you something to start off, about 9,000 miles ago i bought a clutch. stock street disk and heavy duty pressure plate. All i planned to do at the most is 100 shot, which i have but was never installed.

so last night at 1:30 in the morning i come to a stop sign and the clutch goes to the floor and doesnt come back up, im like oh sh!t and i coast it to a near by bank. I get under the hood cant see anything physically wrong, the cable seems loose but thats about it. i get it towed this morning at 930 and the guy calls me at 1030, saying that i blew the pressure plate which i sure as hell hoped i didnt do.

now im a college student and i barely have enough money to by myself a big mac and im talkin with out the super size! i mean 9,000 miles is a little rediculous for a clutch,(ESPECIALLY FOR an A.C.T) so i really dont know what im goin to do.... I AM PISSED to say the least. i might just sell the car as is. Anyone interested. 96 Se-r 109,000 Blown clutch, new azenis, PR intake. Great Condition in and out.

Besides that whats there to do? any opinions? I am just furious that 9,000 miles later clutch goes. Daily driver, back and fourth to school and work, never to the track, never launched even!

Sounds about right for an ACT clutch. For the life of me I don't know why so many people buy these clutches. I've heard more bad things than good.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

whats the recommendation on clutches then? ive heard bad things on all of them. But i thought** A.C.T. would be most reliable, i guess not

I run the Wolf PP and stock 01 disk with no problems. But then again I never speed shift, drag race or launch hard.

I've heard very few negative comments about this set up.

I have 14k hard miles on my ACT clutch. Its a proven clutch and hold up to this day. This is with countless 5th-3rd downshifts and abuse. My brother has his for 4 yrs and abuses it like no other and it holds up. Its just defects are out there and no company can have 100% quality control.
If anything try to get it waranteed or refunded.

The JWT combo is good. Mine has 50k hard miles on it, and is still holding up good.

I blew up my JWT PP after about a similar amount of mileage after I put a turbo on my 98 SE. Know why it happened? Clutch cable was not adjusted correctly. I thought I was always getting wheelspin in 2nd gear and I wasn't - the clutch was slipping violently. Think a too-tight clutch cable could be the culprit?

I have a ACT street/strip HD PP for over a year. I have had ZERO problems..I have to think with any clutch that defects are minimal, but can still happen..but the factor that ***** ever looks at is the driver and adjustment..I know people that think they can drive a stick...but, ummm...well. :D

Yup, I suspect the same thing Ben. Bad install. Most people don't adjust the ACT right. Telltale sign is engagement at the floor. My ACT has been great for the last 25,000 miles. It's held hundreds of drag strip passes and autox'es. It's held around 230 whp with slicks. Countless people love their ACT's. I've heard they are usually really good about warranty work and if it is indeed not a misadjusted clutch cable or shoddy install, then ACT most likely will replace it.

OK, now I am spooked, I have an ACT clutch and it engages fairly close to the floor. What in the install could have gone wrong to have it engage that low? Why does it cause the ACT to fail?

I have an action double diaphram clutch in my 92 and it grabs right off the floor as well. I have over 40K on it, with lots of auto-xs on it, and its just fine. I tried to adjust the cable, but its fully adjusted. I heard you can use a different clutch cable from another nissan, but i dont know which one...

shew, i was worried there for a minute. They say a GA16DE clutch cable will work, but I have heard it doesn't also. Mine is max adjusted and works well except I have to be stopped for it to go into first gear, is there something that can be doen for that?

White, don't give up so soon. If your hurting for money ride the bus for a while and save some cash to get an OEM PP. Do a lot of research on removal and installation, then set aside a hole weekend and get your hands dirty. Also friends or family with tools, garages and mechanical ability come in handy right about now. If you had your old PP and it’s not on its last leg maybe you could use it for a while? I have heard for people taking there cars to automotive repair schools (high school and collage) to save on labor cost, of course you run the risk of them jacking your car up again with no warranty. As a last resort sell some or all of your aftermarket stuff put your OEM back on and use the money to get you back on the road. Sorry for the bad luck

hey guys thanks for the info, i made sure it was adjusted properly as it *never* caught low, it was always near the top. The engagement never ever slipped until earlier that night i shifted into 3rd at 5,000 rpms and i thought i might held my foot on it but it just slipped, wasnt the driver.

as for drivers fault it could be, i suck at life...it wasnt my first clutch on this car 100,000 and 3 people that learned on my old car did the trick to that clutch, and i was pretty comfortable with using this setup.

as for everyone this is exactly why i love the Se-R community, i came on here to tell my story not to degrade A.C.T. but to get my frustrations off my chest as well as give people a heads up to what can happen. Then i read all these posts and i know longer wanna kick some ass. Thank you for all your input and advice and kind words.

Now, onto the replacement.... where did you all find the JWT PP for cheapest!? i need the hookups, please post some recommendations, ive already searched and alot of people use A.C.T. but i have a sour taste in my mouth, so that leaves what for what prices?

thanks again for the kind words,
Matt (Waiting for a reply from A.C.T) Chamberland

my act broke my clutch arm twice, but it is now welded and I just fear every day that my cable will break, and it only has once, but I limped it home.....

The clutch arm breaking is a pretty common problem.

I have had an ACT clutch in my car for over 45000 miles now. It has all been turbocharged miles too. The only problem I have ever had was the clucth cable breaking about 3 weeks ago. The pedeal went to the floor and would not come back up.

If your still looking for a clutch than try to find a Daiken clutch. They are fairly cheap and are the parent company of Exedy. If you dont know Exedy makes disc for ACT and are a reputable clutch company in Japan. Also if its not your PP and its your disc, I have a disc for you. My exedy disc that I had with my old setup is in good condition except for some glazing but definitely looks new still and can be reused. Just pay for shipping and keep your car.

hey Ryan (AZ_TURBOSE) are you sure its your cable? cause that is what mine did, went straight to the floor and wouldnt come back up, i thought it was the cable as well. but the shop told me it was the whole Pressure Plate. Correct me if im wrong, if the PP goes it takes a while, wears down gradually. For somethin that radical to happen where the pedal just releases to the floor and doesnt come back up seems like snapped cable or like someone else said a broken arm... anyone have an experience or comments with this?
