I know, I for one would like a downpipe for less than $300, just wondering what you guys' thoughts are on that. Why has no one stepped up to make a quality 3" downpipe for cheap?

Because no body wants to take the risk.

Buy a 3 inch mandrel U bend and some straight pipe, some flanges. And you're still under 100 bucks.

exactly what this man said.

if you want to save the money, do it yourself. that's why the aftermarket is limited, there's no real need for any of this prefabricated stuff, because most guys have no problem doing it on their own.

Its not that we like to do it on our own. The problem with our weak aftermarket support is that a lot of us are too cheap or can't afford for the big boy companies to make us parts. The honda camp has been forking over money which shows in their aftermarket support. My boy picked up his JGY downpipe from them for like 190$ shipped from them, not a bad deal.

Another good route if you have access to a welder is like they said above. DIY.:biggthump

JGY downpipes are only $176 for a reduction bent 3" downpipe
Their mandrel bent downpipes's are $249 in mild steel
http://www.jgycustoms.com/serg20/downpipes.htm

VRS downpipes in 3" mandrel bent are only $220 in mild steel... thats not bad at all
http://www.vrsexhaust.com/DOWNPIPES/NISSAN_DP/nissan_dp.html

The only downpipes that are 299 are the 3" mandrel bent stainless steel ones from jgy... the one from VRS is actually $280...

if your worried about the price just purchase the $176 one... I just said this is a one time purchase and went with the stainless vrs... its a nice piece.... and it should last a while.

There was a cheap ebay stainless downpipe, but they stopped making them (even though they sold pretty well) a while ago.

Quality and Cheap in the same sentence? You have your answer.

Not to mention, and i know i say this alot, what kind of company wants to deal with a bunch of cheap sr20 owners? Most companies want to deal with people that are willing to spend the money....for example the 350Z crowd.....

I was thinking like the e-bay one, why didn't they continue selling that? I'd love to pay around $125 for one, nice SS mandrel bent, even if the flex pipe is crap.

The problem is, when custom parts are made people don't wanna sell it for cheap IE $20-30 on top of what it cost to make So if it cost $130 in materials. and you sell it for $150, in the end its not worth it. I know for sure I wouldn't wanna sit under a cat and get pissed off for $30..The wire for welding(self feeder) is about $12 a roll the last time I bought it, then gas is about another $30-35. Then the price of shipping the down pipe. You get the point. Shops have moved onto cars were the money is at. Not many SR20 people wanna spent money. And if there is, its your OEM type. T25-T28. Then you have a few with a GT28RS, then again on a OEM manifold. Or people don't have the money for turbo and go N/A.

Your better off doing it yourself. You don't have to hear people bitch about fitment problems, or they don't like this/that. This has been seen on the forum, look at the guy who bought parts to the forum. People bitched and now he is gone. I don't blame the guy.

JGY don't make downpipes, a Muffler shop near him does it which is why some fit and some don't
VRS seems to be a better choice.

And if you get a company on here that makes Downpipes and Manifold your not going to be paying $300.. lol

And the double edge sword about this forum. When I posted about the 3'' mandrel bent Downpipe for the Blue bird for $120 on ebay, Everone douted it and bashed it cause it was so cheap.
Now i still have people asking me about it.

Anyway.. Best bet..Buy the Felw pipe and bends. Take it to a Muffler shop and i'm sure it will be less then 300.

I tried getting a local muffler shop to do a DP, they wouldn't go anywhere near the front of the car. They pretty much wanted to keep it from the flex -> back.

Exactly. Did the same thing when I asked a local shop to weld my intercooler piping. Pretty simple, but they didn't want any part of it. Took it to a performance shop and they wondered why I didn't go there first.

Bingo, agreed.

However, in our Forum defense, we bought B13/14/15's because we are budget-minded enthusiasts. Guys who want to generally go-fast for cheap. That was my original mission when I bought my Classic new. The fastest/best ride, for the least amount of money.

I am positive that the Evo, 350z, BMW, Corvette, and WRX crew all buy more expensive performance parts. Their cars cost considerably more new. Even a new WRX is 24K, 350z is 29K, Corvette is 40K........vs. 18K for Spec V. Let alone my 13-year old, 14K Classic. Folks that have more money to buy a better performance platform, are definitely gonna have more money to modify said platform.

We're a bunch of cheap bastards wanting to go fast. :D

I personally would prefer to custom fabricate my own crap whenever possible, i have an electric MIG welder that usually use to weld body parts onto body restoration projects, once i get my new JWT PP & '01 disc i plan on custom welding my own DP .

Not only am i in complete control of the outcome, i appreciate it that much more knowing i did it myself.
