: Cutting stock shifter on b14: how much to cut?
akapaul 07-09-2002, 10:44 AM Are there any rules or suggestions on how much to cut off? I have a 99 SE-L.
Also, I will be changing the stock knob to an aftermarket one, any recommendations for a fairly cheap knob?
akapaul 07-09-2002, 10:46 AM Here is a picture of what the shifer looks like now:

98sr20ve 07-09-2002, 10:54 AM If you are going to cut I would get a Sparco. They don't need the threads and are good quality. I cut 1 inch which is basically all the threads. You will also need to file the nubs that hold the boot up and make a ridge out of duct tape or something to keep the leather boot from sliding around latter. The silver cover over the lock bolts wouldn't go down over these nubs. All you do is wrap the shaft with some tape about 1/2 inch down from the knob so the boot can't slide down latter. I also wrapped the part under the knob with ducttape so that the knob was snug before I tightened the lock bolts.
cossieturbo 07-09-2002, 01:28 PM On my NX, I cut 7"+ off, but I would really recommend you start off by cutting about 5" off 1st. Try that. As we all know, you can chop more but it does not grow back if too much is removed. The 7"+ inch chop I did took a little getting use to, but now I would have it no other way. I love it.

How cares what the pic looks like. Its all about feel. By cutting an inch off I actually lowered the knob about 1.75 inches. There is a good 1/2 adjustment in the knob itself (with my Sparco) Start with a small amount and work your way down. If you want it real short throw then get a real short shifter with an adjustable throw.
sentra532 07-10-2002, 02:38 AM God I wish I took pics of my cut shifter. It looks rediculously short. I probably hacked at least 6" off. I hardly ever missed a gear. My new OBX short-throw is also cut - about 2" and the travel isn't even that much better than my stock. Doesnt take as much effort to shift ***.
As for shift knobs, don't get a cheap one. I replaced my cheapo shift knob with a gunmetal GReddy ball-type shift knob (40 bux). It's solid metal and really heavy....looks and feels 10 times better than a cheapo shift knob. I used duck tape and glue to keep it on just like my previous knob.
slickwall 07-10-2002, 09:48 AM i have a 98 se and i cut my stock shifter 1.5 inches. it looks and feels great. i have a carbon fiber shifter and i just cut a little and put the knob on and left just enough room to tighten the allen screws above the notch that holds the shift boot up. i love mine and it was not too bad and saved some money that way. i have had mine like that for a few months now and am thinking of goin about 1/2 in more... start off little and go from ther you will find the right spot for you.. every one is different...
:D

chriscar 07-20-2002, 08:31 AM I'm running a Momo Alurac on a short shifter, which I then cut about 2 inches. The Momo is fantastic, and has a great feel.

Crono1321 07-20-2002, 09:24 PM I cut 4.5'' off of my OBX short throw last week, and can I just say...I hated every freaking moment of it. There is this maybe 1/2 millimeter line that protrudes out of the stick, and it made it JUST WIDE ENOUGH so that my momo wouldn't fit over it. So..back to work again, cutting for another 35+ minutes to cut through that. Now my shifter is about the same height as my E-brake when its down. I like it a lot, and everyone I know says it looks a thousand times better. I just couldn't stand having the truck shifter in there. SUB WHERES MY MONEHH!!?
