How long should I expect CV boots to last? I ask because I had the axles replaced right after I bought the car, and now less than 25k miles later the left inner one (by the tranny) has a big-ass hole in it. The other three are pristine. It isn't a rip, it almost looks like a rock hit it and took some of the rubber away - it's roughly oval-shaped, and maybe 1.25" by .5"; I can get my finger in it without touching the sides.

Next question: how do I fix it? I don't have the expertise to drop the axle, and obviously I don't need to replace the axles. Help!

Edit: I've checked out the Quickboot replacements (don't need to drop axle to change boot) and am wondering about them. Anyone have experience with them? Do they work OK or should they really be considered a temporary fix?

TIA

I think that you hit it on the head with what happened. I will *guess* that debirs hit it and caused that defect. You can't hardly blame that on the CV boot itself. That's one that I would chalk up as "shit happens." I have had plenty of that on my car lately...

Replacing the boot isn't tough, but I would suggest renting the tool from Autozone to crimp on the band nice and tight around the boot. You can try to wing it without the tool, but why chance it when they rent/loan the tool for free? If you have a Haynes manual it will help. I'd catch it soon before it gets worse and you have to replace the entire shaft.

I live in Mandsfield and would be willing to help you. I can replace a half-shaft in about 30min now:) Ask me how long it took me a month ago and you'd think I was nuts. I have done about 4 since then:) Not a big deal once you get that axle nut loose.

Good luck!
