I have a question:

It’s not like I am going to do this, but I am wondering, How you guys are managing to keep your turbo'ed car street legal in Cali??
I know in Cali there are really strict emissions. So you can not change ECU, EGR valve, cat. Converter, etc.
So, as I see it right now, any car with custom built turbo is not legal, or you know somebody who can pass it for you, right???

Let’s talk about it. I just want to know how it goes. In other states it’s different, right?

P.S.

Sorry for a very noobie question.

Depends on the car, and the county, etc. etc. etc. I suppose.

I know where I'm at in Texas, and driving a 1998 year model car, the only thing that matters is if I pass an OBD2 test. I no longer am required to smog my vehicle.

short answer is no, no exceptions unless it came that way stock... like the srt4, supra, 300zx, etc.

you can get "magic smog" so you get your tags and insurance but if a cop pops the hood you are SOL.

Avshi750:

he he.. thats what I was thinking about.

Tekkie:

so in texas, when the car is old.. like more then 10-14 years old, you do not have to pass a smoge check ??????

CA sucks, haha thats why i would never ever ever live there. for that very reason. texas was almost bad enough for me, didnt have to do smog but did have to do inspection. i love AZ AZ all the way.

you hae to knwo someone, or do the unthinkable and swap your stock engine back on to pass smog, then swp the turbo back on for another 2 years.

Pre-1998 vehicles require emissions testing. Vehicles older than that of 20 years (IIRC) also do not require emissions testing.

Also, depending on the county, regardless of year, there is no emissions testing.

Like mentioned before, the answer in definitely "NO"! yeah, Cali definitely sucks for the performance minded builder. "Magic Smog" is always an option but like Avshi said, you run the risk of po po poppin the hood.

do the po po always pop the hood when you get pulled over in a modified car. are they really that anal. that sucks even more if thats true. i mean ive heard of the occasional if the cop is a dick but how often do they do that

I thought certain areas were more lax. My buddy's folks live out in Modoc and he was saying its not the same.

well in this case, yes, Cali sucks, but ... here the weather is the best one: no snow, no cold, no nothing... so I guess, I can live my life without all this turbo-problems, or as anotehr better option, if I will ever consider turboed car: golf gti 1.8T... it comes with the stock turbo and it is street legal.....

I just contacted the California Dept. of Consumer Affairs this is their site http://www.dca.ca.gov/
I couldn't find the info on the site directly so that is why I called them.
They told me that you have to do the standard smog check and you can pay an extra fee to reregister your car as a street rod/performance vehicle which depending on the vehicle and set up could cost up to $350 a year which if you really want it custom you pay it.
The funny/crappy thing I read though is that your exhaust can't go above 95db. That means almost all hondas in cali are illegal. I don't live there so I don't know how the cops are but I have friends that do and after I hung up with those people I called one of my friends and he said he pays $275 a year and has to carry a certificate in the car so that when (not if) he gets pulled over he can show he has it legally. Again, I don't live there but that's what I found out.

300$ per year....
Id rather drive none turboed one, and live my life in peace.......;)
14 years old car, too much money to invest to make it turbo, then all this crap to legalize it, and still.... 14 years old car make me cheap, even if it's a vet killer...... :D

well at least here in yuma there is no inspection and no smog, i dont know if its that way for the bigger cities like phoenix or tucson which i think they dont have it either but i could be wrong. but the smaller cities or outer towns around the big cities dont have them that i know of. i love it. here the weather isnt too bad except for the summer, which im used to, i grew up here and have lived my whole life hear except 4 years worth which i was in texas. i couldnt resist and moved my wife and daughter back here, i dont know what it is. haha

I have 2 turbo'd cars both with CELs... I'm looking at major sodomization tendencies if local authorities force me to change plates from MI over to PA.

AZ has craptastic smog laws too in the real cities, Tucson and Phoenix. I am from there and live in socal now. I have been stopped by cops and they couldn't care lessa bout the roll cage, turbo and racing seats. It all depends on the cop.

The only good thing about AZ is regitering in coconino or yavapi county, i.e. flagstaff area, where there are no emissions test. That is how I rock my car.

If I drive 40 miles from my house there is no smog either. My car is registered in Sheridan Oregon so that I didn't have to smog it. I have no cat and that is a requirement where I live at but not where it is registered. Plus my insurance is cheaper there than it is at my house by like $25 bucks a month. Full coverage on 4 cars is only $101 a month. WOOT!!
