: Make your trunk feel lighter:
PJ93 SE-R 11-03-2007, 03:00 AM Some generic hydrolic struts I installed a few months back. Though I'd see how they stood up before sharing them with you guys. My heavy ass trunk slammed down on my oldest kid's fingers this summer, prompting me to lighten it up, without actually lightening it up. Our trunk lids aren't only heavy, but the max opening point is too close to 90 degrees, so any bump will send it slamming shut. I put in these hydrolic struts, that hold it all the way open, and help it open at about one third of the way.
all the way open and staying that way:

here's the breaking point, where it will stay before a push down will close it, and a pull upwards will let it open itself all the way up.

SE-R_TECH 11-03-2007, 03:38 AM Do you know what the over all length of the strut is? I have a set off of a 350z hatch and was contemplating this same mod. Looks great.
PJ93 SE-R 11-03-2007, 10:11 AM Do you know what the over all length of the strut is?
Length from end link to end link fully stretched is 17 3/4 inches. fully compressed is 10 3/4. If your's are a little different, it still may work, your mounting points just may be in another spot.
jingjing 11-03-2007, 10:38 AM glad you did this. ive been wanting to do this for a long time, but didnt know where the mounting points would be. i have some in my garage, might have to do this soon.
PJ93 SE-R 11-03-2007, 11:32 AM Just do alot of test fitting before you drill any holes. You'll have to raise the car up, because the bottom mounts through the rear wheel well. good luck.
BenFenner 11-03-2007, 11:40 AM Great mod. I might do this for my brother's SE-R. My SE-R on the other hand still has the factory torsion bars that keep the trunk very light. You did research the factory solution before trying this, no?

Yes I did. The mounting brackets for the torsion bars were a little bent up, so this option was actually easier than getting everything back to stock. Besides, If I remember right, when I had my original "classic" brand new in 93, the trunk was still pretty heavy. This mod is kinda cool, because after a certain point, it opens by itself.
llaprad1 11-09-2007, 02:15 PM This is awesome...my dad's been wanting to do this with actuators, just because he always has some lying around.
I'm always afraid the latch is going to come down on my back and stab me!!
classicaddict 11-09-2007, 02:53 PM acward...........i have never had an issue with my trunk, other than it leaking of course lol.

Nissanboy561 11-10-2007, 10:08 PM i wanna put some on my hood. :)
llaprad1 11-10-2007, 11:31 PM A lot of people remove the stock trunk 'helpers' for one reason or another. I did because it rattled like crazy.
Never realized until after, the trunk weighs like 500 lbs.
EarthWormJDM 11-11-2007, 12:28 PM thats a hot mod bro i need to do that.last night i was woking on my car and i was putting something in the trunk and i was half way in the trunk and all of a sudden it slammed on my back.that shi**** was heavy
BenFenner 11-11-2007, 12:33 PM the trunk weighs like 500 lbs.
