I just bought a 97 VLSD tranny for $550. I found it using www.car-parts.com. That was a good price. For that price you get a stock nissan lsd which should have about 40% lock-up. I have never seent the official states on the lock-up ratio but most OEM are in that range. You could also buy the new Nissan Motorsports lsd that fits into your non-lsd tranny. My local dealer quoted me $900 for it. I heard it really should be more like $750 or so. It has more lock-up then the OEM one and is open to the tranny fluid so it won't fade as quick when it starts to heat up. KAAZ is supposed to make one for the LSD tranny soon. It will cost about what the Nissan Motorsports one cost. It really is a matter of how much you want to spend. If you use the 95-97 tranny you will also need the driver side axle for the VSLD tranny. About 75 bucks or so. BTW. If you could find the case off of a VSLD tranny I would sell you the VSLD out of my tranny and you could convert your non-lsd to a lsd tranny. So I have been told.

Think about installing a Phantom Grip.
Mike K. thinks it is slightly better overall than the VLSD and at $280 it's reasonable.
You don't need the VLSD like you do to upgrade to the Quaiffe (sp?)

I have heard mixed reviews of the Phantom Grip. From what I can tell people who care about going straight love it. Where did you see Mike K. say it was better then the VSLD. That I have not seen (and I looked at his writeup in the Sentra Online Magazine). Is it someplace else. He did give the New Nissan Motorsports Diff a big thumbs on the mailing list.

Thanks again for your support, yeah the reason I am looking for an LSD is to improve the cars overall handling. I do appriciate all the reponses though it looks as if I am going to have to save my money for the nissan motorsports LSD since it does appear that would be best for what I am looking for... BTW exactly what kind of LSD is the Phantom Grip considering that it would mainly be good for just straight line performance compared to the Nissan Motorsports LSD? (1, 1.5, 2 way??)

Make sure you get the right LSD. The dealers do not have it in any of thier catalogs at this time. You have to get them to call Nissan Motorsports to get the right part. Ask for the new 1.5 way LSD that fits the non-lsd tranny. Because the Phantom Grip is not a clutch type lsd I don't think it will be listed as a 1,1.5 or 2 way. Good Luck.

Although the PG doesn't have plates, per se, it still functions like a clutch-type LSD. I can't tell you what they spec it at (1.5, 2, etc) but I'd bet that they would answer that.

It works very well, a little better than the VLSD.
It also works well with worn out VLSD's as an assist
device, I highly recomend them.

Look for the info on Sentra.net and NPM magazine.

That is real interesting. I have no reason to doubt him becuase of his reputation but I just don't like the philosophy behind the Phantom Grip. It seems Half-A$$ to me. I would love to drive a car with one. The price is sure great. What a delima for someone looking to spend their money on a lsd. BTW thanks for posting his quote.

That's what I thought, that was the point of my original question. I would think that there would be excessive wear to the open diff due to the friction and outward spring pressure.
Who knows!? :)
