i have had several people tell me that with a turbocharged motor, it would not matter if my exhaust piping was crush bent, or mandrel bent... i had the money, and was ready, to get mandrel bent piping for my exhaust until this came up... what do you guys think cause it would save me $200...

mandrel is mo betta

Dave Allen, if Dave Allen's Asspipes sells a quality mandrel bent 3" for about $400, IIRC.

pm terrin (92 SE-R) for more details.

mandrel all the way...i know a few ppl that went the cheap route, and ended up changing it over later. i've got 3" mandrel all the way back with no cat, and it rocks

you want your exhaust to have as little bends as possible, this lets the exhaust gas flow faster, giving you more HP in a turboed engine. when you use crush bent, there are a series of ripples on each bend that cause major turbulence hindering your exhaust flow dramatically.

mandrel...way better flow any day over a crushed bent pipe.

If you've got the $200 to blow, then go ahead and get the mandrel bends. However, if there's something else you'd like to spend that money on, go with the press-bent pipe. You can always upgrade later, once you get to a point that it's actually limiting you. Hell, you'd have one monster of a car if it's the bends that are limiting you, but in the end mandrel is indeed better.

dave's pipe's are welded. True mandrel is one long pipe with no welds. If you want to be that picky ,weld will also create turbulents

Weld will create turbulence if you suck at welding.

Their is currrently crush bends, reduction bends, and mandrel bends. By looks alone a crush bend looks restrictive(hence the wrinkles), but the reduction bend does not look restrictive at all. The whole point of this reply is their any dyno proof that a mandrel bend produces more power that a reduction bend. I don't want to here any quatum physical equations, i want hard dyno proof. I do have schooling in airflow dynamics. In the corner of a reduction bend the pipe diameter reduces, this does not produce back pressure unless ure producing insane amounts of horsepower, which in that case you remove the exhaust anyway! It acually creates a venturi effect as long as it is smooth and creates no turbulance(called laminar air flow), which in effect will actually speed the airflow through this area(the bend). This is based on aircraft airconditioning systems which use pressures in upwards of 50psi!As long as your pipe diameter stays large their should be no need for mandrel bends. Because a company claims it is better and magazines back it up does not mean it is law. Ok i now have my flame suit on, so roast me!:D
