Its pretty simple...
they are called Gas Charged Lift Supports and you can get them at Canadian Tire if your in Canada and prob any big auto place in the States.
I hope that helps you

i dont want to steal this thread, but i have a related question. My gas struts are near blown too, and when i pop the hatch from inside the car i hear the latch unlock it but the latch dont pop open. Is this from the blown struts or does the cable to the latch need to be adjusted?

I had the same problem. Changed gas struts, and the hatch pops like new again. YMMV...

The only thing about the autozone ones are you have to drill out the pop rivet on your existing brackets. And you have to pick up some small nuts and bolts. Partsbin.com sells them cheap as well. I think they might be OEM Nissan. If I remember right they go for 51 a pair.

I didnt have to drill shit! the bottom brackets had 2 10mm bolts.. and the new struts had brackets on them 20 minutes tops to replace them.. no hardware required!!!! just make sure you get the right ones! sure you could get the nissan ones for 50 bucks but when they blow out again theres another 50 bucks you have to blow ... when u couldve just spent 63 and exchanged them next time they blow out again.....makes sense to me... i have had no difficulties at all with mine... 20 minute install no drilling no extra hardware lifetime warranty.... easiset route in my opinion...

That is strange. They didn't have them in stock. They ordered them and the length was correct but it didn't include the brackets. And they said these didn't have the lifetime warranty. Oh well doesn't really matter that NX was sold 5 months ago.

They might be discontinued. A dude on the
SE-R mailing list recently tried to order
them from Autozone and had no luck.

If you can't find any, try this:

It seems like a ghetto fix but actually
works really good. If you don't like it,
you only blew $7

They are no longer available at Autozone. I tried to get some, and Monroe no longer makes them, so they will never be available ever from Monroe. If you Canadian guys know of a place to get some that has them in stock or can get them, please let me know.

ditto - I had a couple shops say they could get them only to call me back a week later to say they were discontinued. I looked at the junkyards over serveral months, but every NX I found had blown lift struts.

Finally, after using a pvc pipe for more then a year, I bit the bullet and ordered a spendy pair of oem lifts from courtesyparts. It didn't hurt too bad ; its nice to have a hatch that can lift and hold.

Dude, it will work. They say that because the
diameter of the shaft on our strut is a little
big. Take some sandpaper or a file and grind
down the repair bracket a little bit and it works like a charm.

Its barely noticeable, activates automatically,
and keeps the hatch up. To close the hatch you do
need 2 hands though, one to lift it slightly and the other to flip the little prop back down as you lower the hatch. If you don't want to spend the
$$$ on new hatch struts this is the way to go.

I just spent a shit load of time & money in June trying to get working struts for my two NXen. Here's the situation: the aftermarket ones were made by Monroe. Monroe recently discontinued them, due to lack of demand. I tried AutoZone, Advance Auto, JC Whitney, a couple other places, and no one had them any more.

Finally tried an on-line order with Big-A Auto Parts. They're now out of business and being assimilated by CarQuest. They had TWO left on the shelf at their warehose, one was missing some of the mounting hardware. They are MINE NOW for $34/ea.

You can get OEM ones from Courtesy Nissan for about $64/ea with their 25% discount.

You *may* get by with just one new one. My blown ones took 70 - 80lbs to compress. If you think your's are "gone" - try taking one out, hehe! SLAM!! Damn that hatch is heavy! The new Monroes requires around 150lbs. I put one new strut on each of my cars, and both hatches stay up OK now. I've since bought two Nissan ones and will have new all around.

Nissan dealers in my area want more than $90 each for the struts, and of course they advise against getting just one - they claim it fail earlier and you'll be out another $90. Any attempts to find them elsewhere have failed. I prop the hatch up, but I found in the Summer that the higher temperatures give the struts just enough extra pressure to hold the hatch up. Gotta love physics. Guess I'm ok until Fall...

Call Brian at www.courtesyparts.com , and tell him you're from the fourms. I'm sure he'll give you a good deal.

In reply to Da91NX's question. My struts are OK, but I also couldn't get my hatch to pop open on its own from inside the car or with the key. I always had to lift the hatch as I turned the key. You can lower the U-bracket, that the hatch latch grasps, down about 1/8" - 1/4"; and the hatch will actually pop open. I initally removed the whole piece of trim, but later realized that there are two plastic plugs that pop out and give access to the bolts.

Courtesy will give anyone off the street 25% off retail. Same deal for everyone. You really don't need to mention club affiliations, or ask for anyone special.

While they are always very "Courteous", their order accuracy has been known to suck. Just tell 'em to hold onto the whole order till it's all ready to ship! DO NOT ask them to make partial shipments, or ask for some of it over-nite and some ground!
