: My Turn!!

I was at the gas station just a few minutes ago, I was filling up my right front tire with air. All of the sudden I hear this ticking sound, I was like, ah hell no. I pop up the engine and I hear, tick, tick, tick. So I rev the engine and the ticking gets faster. Sounds like a freaking rod bearing!!!   . I put a hose on the number 3 spark plug and could hear the ticking from that cylinder only. I'm thinking it's a rod bearing, what do you people think, any ideas? If it's that I'm hoping the crankshaft is to bad that way i'll just upgrade a number on the bearing if not i'll shave the crankshaft to .010.

Sean I don't really have the money right now for that, fixing up this motor would be cheaper for me right now.

its not that much to get a jdm engine. i got mine for 250+ shipping.

Go the road less traveled...trade in the car for a caddy...............:D

LOL, yeah, lemme think about that one Mndgy ;).

NissanGuy01:

I wish they were that cheap over here (there $700-900 over here). I can most likely fix it down here for less than $200 if the damage isn't that bad.

I would do the spark plug wire test to make sure you have a spun bearing. Are you sure it isn't your injectors ticking loudly?

If you need a new enginer, JDM is the way to go.

This may sound like a stupid thing, but check your injectors and make absolutely sure they're connected firmly in their harnesses.

I thought my dad had a spun rod bearing. We couldnt figure out why there was a loud ticking for a while until I saw that one of the injectores was baerly not connected.

Its worth a look, anyway.

A spun bearing will not make a ticking sound, it's a deeper sound than that, more of a rap or knock. Pop the hood ang gently rev the engine, if it's a spun bearing you'll hear the sound just as you tip into the throttle, and right before the engine returns to idle. As someone else suggested, do the spark plug wire trick. Remove a wire from one plug at a time and rev the engine. If the sound goes away, then you've found the offending bearing.

As long as you haven't driven the car too much, and it's still a light knock, it will cost allot less than a JDM swap. Figure on a new set of bearings, a tube of sealer, and two oil changes.

Once you drop the oil pans, closely inspect the crank, if it's scored, then it's pretty much a write off. For a quick analysis, run a fingernail across the bearing surface on the crank, if any ridges catch on your nail, the crank is shot. I've read that the crank tolerances are extremely tight, much tighter than the typical domestic V8, and the surface is hardened, so regrinding it is not an option.

Do you have an FSM, you'll need it for the torque specs and tightening sequence. And there's two 'hidden' bolts holding the upper oil pans that are easy to miss without the FSM.

llaprad1:

Thanks for the suggestion, I did check it out and the car stopped the ticking noise.

Chriscar:

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm still a little worried about this so just for piece of mind i'm gonna get an oil pressure gauge and also see how the oil pump is doing. BTW, I have an FSM ;).

Thanks everybody for the help.

Here is what my engine sounded like, and I had a spun bearing.

Does it sound anything like that?

Well, if it doesnt sound that bad, you might be lucky and not have a rod knock. Good luck with it.

I'm a two time loser, and mine didn't sound *nearly* that bad. I drove my 91 SE-R for 40k miles (with no fifth gear  ) with a light rod knock, until one day my wife brought the car home and it was hammering away *way* worse than that. At that point the crank was toast. On my 92, I spun the bearings while going around a long sweeper at high revs, and low oil. The sound was exactly like my 91. I drove the car 2 or 3 miles to get it home and parked it until I swapped the bearings.
