Has anybody with a turbo ever taken a long (5000 mile +) road trip and survived? I ask because I'm toying with the idea of boosting an NX and running it in the One Lap of America in the next few years but I'm not sure if it's feasible. Any info would be appreciated regarding high powered turbo SR20's and long road trips. If it doesn't work out then I'm going to have to buy a Honda. Thanks in advance.

I dont have a SR, but I have a ka24det, and I ran my turbo for over a year no problem. I even ran it driving to and from N.C once and to and from FL once. no problem, just make sure you change your oil regularly, probably before you go on the 1 lap, and maybe once in between.

Don't buy a honda. Our cars are better suited for a turbo anyways. Just be sure to do everything right. Don't expect to always run high boost. Build it for high boost and run a lower amount on the track. Also read this thread (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13846&perpage=20&pagenumber=2). It has some info on page 2 about the one lap stuff and turbo'd de's. I would start with a DET if I was going to do trackwork with a sr20.

Thanks guys. I guess it boils down to turbo and general reliability, which was discussed in that thread. Anybody else have any comments?

A DET is built for boost right from the factory, so I don't think you would have a cause for mechanical concern, as long as you don't go too crazy with the boost.
You'd just have to worry about the non-det items, your ignition system, fuel system and especially cooling system.
As for the cooling, water wetter worked great for me. I think the NX already has a bigger radiator, but it has a small cooling opening. An oil cooler might not hurt, but I heard someone who was concerned about a pressure drop that may be caused by an oil cooler.
As usual, my opinions are just that and really matter little. I'd really cheer for you though if you ran one lap. Looks like fun.

Should be fine. I don't drive my SE-R much anymore, furthest i've gone was probably from Seattle to Tacoma. My suspension is what makes me not wanna drive far for very long.

3 Days after finishing my turbo install I drove my car pretty much 10 hours straight from N. California to WA. This was on my 9:5:1 motor with 103,000 miles with Pulsar GTIR parts. Car didn't even hiccup. Also made it all the way home a few days later with no problems. ( By the way ....motors still in there and running strong )

Thanks for the info everyone. Would turning the boost way down on the highway help with reliability?

As long as you don't step on it, you won't even get into boost.
