: how to paint dash tastefully???
Fonque 07-16-2002, 12:30 AM dont laugh but i was thinkin about painting my dash, a mix of black and green to match the color scheme im developing but i cant think of a way to paint the dash and have it look tasteful? the niceest i have seen wuold be this car even though is it factory colored this way i like the split dash color (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?postid=174350#post174350)
only i would like the white/grayish part to be green, any ideas on how to do it tastefully and what type of paint would work?
ihateloops 07-16-2002, 02:09 AM i really dont think there is a way to do it tastefully, if you really want to use green.
Fonque 07-16-2002, 10:07 AM lol dammit thats what i figured maybe there is a shade that blends in well? eh i might just give up on this one
chriscar 07-16-2002, 10:56 AM Tastefully painted dash is an oxymoron. :)
I can't understand why people paint their dashboards and other interior parts. To me it looks very cheap, and is the epitome of rice. Plus, they usually only paint the parts that can be easily removed, so you wind up with a black dashboard, and a (for instance) white shifter surround/console/air vents, door handle surround, etc.
The fact that you're asking how it can be done tastefully leads me to believe that you've got enough mixed feelings about it that you'll regret doing it.

-stepping off soapbox- ;)
Fonque 07-16-2002, 01:25 PM well i was just curious *** i was running ideas through my head of how to make my interior look different, still dont know if im going to do anything, although i do think it would look tight if the interior on an nx could be done entirely in flat black without the dark grey accents
nx2000racer 07-16-2002, 01:28 PM yea man, if i were you, i'd find something else to work on! :D

How about, a nice Momo Champion wheel, Momo Alurac knob, some nice (functional, not ricey) pedals, a shift light, pillar pod, good seats, a rollbar, and harnesses. Now you got a killer looking, and very functional looking interior.

One exception I can think of --
Look up Facel-Vega. +/- 1954-1964, French, Chrysler V-8's. As expensive as these things were, the dashes were painted metal, fake woodgrain. And they look pretty good.
That said, I don't see anything one could do to paint an SE-R's dash that wouldn't turn out nasty.
chriscar 07-16-2002, 02:08 PM You're right, but I was referring to repainting a plastic dashboard, and interior panels. Factory done is a different story, the PT Crusier comes to mind.

eric96ser 07-16-2002, 02:32 PM Chris, we all know you have a glow in the dark dashboard. Your "Powered by Honda" seatbelt pads are cool too.
:D
Crono1321 07-16-2002, 03:19 PM Nah I say go for it, as long as you make it look nice, not cheaply done. You might have sand it down to make it smooth, but I'm not sure I've never done anything of the sort. This guy dave painted his middle piece red, and that was the only part. It looked nice, not too offensive to my eyes, but enough to accentuate the interior. Very nice and I would recommend doing it, but...not green. Well, what color is your car?
Fonque 07-16-2002, 08:17 PM my car is black now, but im goin to get the car painted an irridescent green cant remember the exact name of the color at the moment, with gun metal or black rims, the interior i want black everything with dashes of green here and there, at the least i would like to get rid of all the grey.
of course all this is just an idea and im completely broke so more than likely this will never happen
Serban 07-16-2002, 09:26 PM STEP AWAY FROM THE SPRAY PAINT!!
Seriously, leave the dash alone, do what Chris said, get a nice steering wheel, shift knob, some gauges (not a big rice tach though).
I knew someone with an SE-R who painted the AC vents, center console, and a few other pieces blue, he did paint them nice, the paint wasn't coming off, but it just didnt look right at all!
So I would highly advise againt painting your dash. It came the color it did for a reason, leave it that way!
Rittmeister 07-16-2002, 09:52 PM Here's what mine looked like, for a while at least. I still have the pieces but the interior is stock right now. I'd like to figure out a way to smooth the parts so they don't have the pebble grain of the rest of the interior; I think that would look a little better, but I haven't pursued it at this point.

Hope this at least helps you make a decision. NO other parts were painted, only the center bezel and shift boot bezel.
ihateloops 07-16-2002, 10:26 PM i have this friend with a red talon, and he changed out his entire interior basically, and it looks good. probably not gonna happen with green though.
RySE-R 1 07-17-2002, 01:21 AM It seems like too much work, not enough gain. I wouldn't do it.
Fonque 07-17-2002, 11:46 AM yeah every i dea i thinkof does seem a little pricy, i was also thikin about buying my own fabric and have my mom cook up a pattern, she said she would if i bought her all the supplies, that way i could have some cheap still stock black seats
coach 07-17-2002, 12:12 PM you have to use a primer and sand it to get a smooth base, that is the only way to get rid of the grain effect of the stock parts. Then, if you use model spray paints instead of regular spray paint, the cans and paint spray much more evenly and have a luster to them instead of the dullness of regular spray paints. I have a friend that painted his dash parts using that method and it looks so professionally done I couldn't believe it. There are a couple small runs that I caught but it was his first time and he just sanded those parts down and repainted them. Looks great now!

96stse-r 07-17-2002, 01:26 PM I think a very dark green on the bottom half would be nice if well done. Continuity would be key, as others have alluded to. You might consider painting the lower door panels also - the ones that make up the map pockets and speaker grills. I would suggest sanding to rough up the surface and large amounts of a filling primer. Sand the primer down until it is smooth. Then you'll have a decent base to paint over. It won't be durable though, so you'll have to be careful. Temperature extremes are also something to avoid if you're doing this. The material will likely shrink and expand beyond the capabilities of the paint you use. Maybe not if you use high quality paint.

Dragoon262 07-23-2002, 01:20 AM well if u really want some nice interior work done then u should probably look into reupholstry for the seats; if u dont have racing seats that is. u can do leather or vynal which will make it look much nicer, get a mtaching shift knob and boot if u want, it might be hard to do with green, my car is red so its easy, ill have some pics up hopefully in a few days and u all can check it out. Just make sure u get it done professionally the seats are a pain nissan used a bunch of glue for the fabric so dont even try and venture it on ur own or u'll tear ur sh!t up really bad.
