so im taking apart my NX to paint it.. and i find this nasty black gooey stuff everywhere.
theres alot of it around the tail lights, and around the plastic that is under neither the door panels.
i understand it is for like sound dampening/insulation, but is there an easier way to get rid of it than scraping it with a paint scraper?

Freeze it with dry ice and chip it off.

i changed tail lights and this is what i did
what you need:
- heat gun or hair dryer
- engine degreaser
-an ass load of rags
-i also suggest plastic gloves (look for "diamond grip" some parts stores sell that brand and they rock, i get the same ones off my snap on truck)
what you do:
use the hair dryer or heat gun and heat the stuff up, it becomes more of a liquied when hot and you can just wipe it off instead of useing a sraper. once you have most of it off use the engine degreaser on a new rag and start to clean off any left over cancer. finally use a damp cloth and remove any dryed degreaser.
trust me when i tell you thats the best way to do it. i have not found anything less messy to use in place of it, i used silicon on my tail lights.....but that perminent, and the next time i need to remove them when i paint my car im sure i will need to get new tail lights.

u mentioned that you used silicon when u re-installed the tail lights, but it will be 10X harder to get them out without breaking them..
anyone have any better ideas than using silicon when re-installing the tail lights?!

What's wrong with the black stuff? Sure it's a little messy, but it works well.

i found some stuff in our shop today kinda like the stuff pictured.. its black gooey stuff with film on both sides for storage :D
i think it will work and not be as nasty as the black stuff that is in there now..
