: Rally-X and Track

Hi,
I have a '94 SE-R that I'm planning on rally crossing next year and hopefully doing a couple of track days (nothing competitive, just for fun). Right now it's totally stock and the struts need replaced. I'm not sure what to do with the suspension... Is it possible to get a set up that would be ok to do both auto-x and track? How would AGXs with the stock springs be?

Is there any other items you would suggest changing/upgrading?

Thanks!

Either have a great skid plate or a spare oil pan, even the slightest dent will contribute to oil starve.

I'm assuming you mean rallycross, as in wider, more open autocrossing on dirt? Stock-height suspension is better than going lower.

I agree about the spare oil pan. Make sure you get one from a B13 SR20 car, as the G20/Bluebird/etc. ones are different. On a level dirt or gravel field without big ruts, rocks, or jumps as is typical for a SCCA RallyCross, oil pan impacts shouldn't be a big deal, though. Most of my oil pan hits have involved concrete. Or getting air.

After new struts (AGX + stock springs is fine), tire choice is most important. Summer/performance tires don't work for rallycross - I know from experience. Bring a spare set of snow tires or all-seasons with good tread.

Lapdays on stock suspension can be a lot of fun. There you want a sticky tire that won't chunk from having tall treadblocks and a lot of void space (opposite of rally). Falken Azenis, Hankook RS-2, or something along those lines is a good place to start. Also, don't forget the brakes. Stock B13 SE-R brakes are a little on the small side for heat management, so get good fluid and upgrade to AD22's, or at least a good AD18 track pad.

After laying on my back with oil running down to my elbow and wet RTV on a G20 pan trying to go on a B13 block, I can confirm this.

I've been rallycrossing a B13 for three years and using it as a course opening car for stage rallies, no skid plate, and no problems. For rallycross, it's really not an issue. It's just plain dumb luck that I haven't mashed it on stage yet though. Car is getting a skidplate over the winter. The B13 just isn't set up well to take one without adding structure to support it, and I didn't have a welder until a short while ago.

Thanks for all the info! I really appreciate it.

Has anyone come across any skid plates that have been fabbed up???
Some design help would be awesome

I keep asking the same question, but I've never gotten any responses, and I've not had the chance to take a close enough look at a B13 rally car (i tend to be extremely busy at events and not get a chance to really look at the cars).

I have some ideas about how I'm going to set mine up, and I'll try to take photos and document it as I go.

I noticed this thread's not quite a year old. :)

I just made a skidplate out of Polyethylene, if anyone's interested in pics/design/feedback.

I saw you and Rob Bergstrom were at Nationals with the B13s. :)

I'd love to see what you came up with for a skidplate.

I made one a while back, but I had to have it bent at a machine shop and weld in a bunch of support places to the subframes, etc in order to bolt it all on. It looks really nice now that it's finished, but really compromises room to run a good header. Definitely no 4 into 1 for me!

Yeah, I actually saw a photo of the one llaprad1 is talking about:

Looks effective for rallycross, for sure.

I've got a hunk of 3/16" 6061 aluminum waiting to be cut and welded. I'm going to go full width and weld brackets onto the frame rails to support the outside edges.

I'll get better pics this weekend when I get under the car for maintenance.

Its a sheet of 3/8" Polyethylene. It's trimmed around the flexpipe, so it doesn't melt (hopefully). I attached it with 9 sheet metal screws to the front fascia, 6 hex head sheet metal screws through the crossmember and 2 strategically placed hose clamps and zip ties.

I might work on additional bracing, but its really stable with so many contact points. I was hoping it was pliable enough to take a beating instead of the oil pan.

It's good for now anyway, and was a super duper piece of cake to cut/drill. As opposed to aluminum or steel.

If I have mine off the rally car this weekend, I'll snap some pics for you guys.

Well, I loaded my SE-R onto the trailer at my friend's place today. Head back early on Saturday to pick it up and haul to our last event of the season.

SE-Rally, did you pick up Dondlinger's SE-R, or is the old Jake Himes' car, or a different one?

Jake's old car. It's not the nicest car out there, but it was definitely the right price. I'll have it whipped back into shape for SnoDrift.

Ah. If you ever decide to sell that car, let me know. Lot of rally memories wrapped up in that shell.

Yep. Lots of history behind this car, makes it all that much better. It has started 34 rallies! And will go on to start a few more.
