: Bent trailing arm???

I got the Rota Slipstreams (15x6.5 40 offset) & Falken Azenis (205/50-15) today. I put them on and the right rear STILL rubs on the trailing arm, even with a 5mm spacer. That makes 2 sets of rims and tires that *should* have fit with no rubbing. So, now I'm thinking that the trailing arm is bent. Is the rear trailing arm on the NX/Classic straight, or is there a bend in it? BTW, no rubbing on the left rear, though the clearance, even with a spacer, only a couple of mm. Maybe they are both bent, the right more than the left? I dunno... Let's say one or both are bent.

How difficult is it to change the rear trailing link?

Has anyone done this?

Do the bushings have to be pressed out of the old and into the new?

If so, how difficult is it, and would kind of tools would I need to do it myself?

So many questions....

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Awww, man! Now you've got me wondering if that's the same rubbing sound I'm hearing from the rear sounding like metal rubbing on metal. It seems to happen more when I steer or when I'm slowing down (in general when there are more g-loads on the suspension). I'm checking my brakes tomorrow to see if that might be it.

I would be interested too to see what other's have to say.

I had a slight rubbing problem on my NX after I installed my Hot Bits rally c-overs - the top of the rear right tire was rubbing slightly on the lower spring perch - this was with some old snow tires with 181 section width. Luckily my rally tires are 166mm, so there's no problem now. (especially if I don't think about it)

The trailing link is pretty heavy duty, I think it's unlikely to be the problem. The rear strut towers on the coupe are fairly weak - they also rust easily. I think that's the source of my problem - a deformed shell. Have you removed the rear interior to look at your strut towers? If you want some better answers, you can try taking it to an alignment shop for diagnosis. They should be able to give you an idea of where the defromation is.

As far as replacing the link - I haven't done it. I've heard the bolts may snap - they're prone to rust, so you may want to have replacements on hand. As far as the whole press question, my experience installing ES bushes (front ctrl arms, sway and engine) tells me it's a bit of a red herring. Mine were easy to install and I didn't need a press. I used a vise with a cylinder in some cases, a hacksaw in some cases and careful use of a torch in others.

UPDATE: I just checked another NX in town here (thx Aaron!). I have determined that the trailing arm is either installed backwards, or the left one is on the right side, and vice versa. The trailing arm is curved, and on Aaron's car, the trailing arm curves in towards the center of the car. On mine, it curves towards the *outside* of the car, towards the rim/tires. GRRRRRR.....

Update Version 2.0 - The trailing arms are the same part number, left and right; therefore, they were installed backwards! I had them switched today, also one control arm on the right side was slightly bent - replaced that.

My NX is rub free! Can't wait to humiliate myself at the autox this weekend! :)

BTW, I have a set of Kosei K1's 17x7.5 35 offset with Yoko A520 205/40-17's for sale, and they DO fit an NX or Classic WITHOUT RUBBING! :)
