OK so i want the BBDET motor or pulsar gti-r motor or some variation. But my friend Jon Felton has dealt with them alot firsthand, and says that if i go that route, i will go through one transmission every year, and its a big mistake. i wont go a month without having it back in the shop and messing with it. he says he has yet to see a reliable turbo setup on an se-r. any comments to this? ive had my heart set on this det job for awhile now, but i cant afford a tranny every freakin year! is all this that he says true?? thanks in advance!

There might be some truth to it. I'm not sure about the once a year deal. It also depends on how you drive, how hard will you launch your car, and so on....

The SE-R do have a weak tranny. There are methods of making it stronger. You can also break your tranny if you allow wheel hops often. The DET are prone of wheel hops/spin from 1st to about 3rd gear.

If you know of someone that owns a DET, I would recommend of test driving a DET so you know what your getting yourself into. I love my DET.

I would have to say that the advantages of a DET are tremendous. They are very reliable if not modified and the tranny problems can be postponed. If you weld and cryo your tranny then it will help a lot. Most people don't have many problems, but if you launch hard a lot your bound to run into tranny problems. The sr20ve doesn't seem to blow through trannies like the DET does so far. In my opinion I would go for it.

I'll take the SR20DET any day over the stock SR motor. I say go for it man.

I had a turbo classic for almost 3 years, for the first year I had custom turbo kit on my stock DE, then I blew the engine and dropped a DET with the same turbo kit. I've always had the same transmission ,wich is welded and cryotreated, and has about 140K miles. I've done about 25 drag passes with slicks a few of them in the high 12's. I drive the car every day. If you take the due precautions you are less likely to have continued transmission problems. This is what I would do :
*Weld the transmission case
*Shotpeen and Cryotreat the gears and input shaft.
*Use a sprung hub clutch disc .
*Use redline shockproof gear oil or NEO RHD
*Get ES motor moun inserts or JWT mounts or PR Mounts.
*Install ES control arm bushings.
* Keep in mind that the transmission is weak so don't torture it.

That's just my opinion. Hope this helps

My SE-R w/ a DET is my only car. With a FMIC and 3" exhaust the engine is actually less stressed than it would be in a Bluebird. If you keep the boost stock while puttering around town, you shouldn't have any tranny issues. When you really romp on the car, you start to expose its weaknesses, and that goes for turbo, NOS, NA.

Believe me, the DET is wonderful. Take the plunge, DO IT! :)

It also take alot of money(det-$1700, tranny cryo-$150, act clutch-$415 ,ecu-$600 ,3in. exhaust- $600 down pipe- $175 those are sum of the big things.Plus you should put bearings and replace all belt's and hoses. P.S. order the jwt ecu first *** it will take the longest 3-months

If you have the extra cabbage laying around go for it! I have a pulsar motor in my sentra: i love the power but wouldn't recommend the engine do to hard to find/expensive/wait till you die to get parts.
I would either go with the newer blue bird motor or get the aviner (SP?) the aviner has 226 hp (pulsar 227). These two will cost the same so shop around to get the newer motor.
Or if you only want a mild setup then just piece together a turbo set up and put it on your sr20.
OR buy my car!
Keep in mind you are playing with a modified car. Our cars where never ment to have 300+ hp so extra measures need to be takin with the tranny/drive train.

i have 362 @ the wheels with 92 se-r (nitrous fed!) and i give my tranny absolute hell on the street and at the track. it has never failed on me... stock trans with 132k mile and running like new... i was running 180shot of n2o on it then last w/e i ran a 200 shot and everything is still intact!!! what i am saying is that you should not have any problems till about 400hp or more! and i am still running stock axles!!!
