Hey Guys,
My check engine light went on a month ago. It was code 36. So I cleaned my EGR tube. Over the weekend the CEL went back on, and again it's code 36. How can know if it's the EGR or BPT valve that is malfunctioning? EGR is around $80 from Autozone, but I can't find a price on a BPT valve. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had the same problem with my 95 se-r when I got it in dec 2000. Replaced the egr under warranty, didn't work. Dealership wanted to replace the bpt, but I said NOOO. Try replacing the egr tube, that did it for me. Cost about $50 for me, that was at a non-nissan dealer though.

I checked my tube, and it seems that I already have the 8mm one. If I'm correct, the 10mm tube was the one that was causing problems on the '95.

Ok, I'll tell you my trick. This happens on average about once every 3-4 months on my 96 SE-R. So, from what I can gather, a certain type of driving (usually stop-n-go) triggers my code 36 problem. Then, if I don't clear the code, the ECU starts jacking the system around trying to get it corrected.

So, I just clear the code, and run until it goes off again. I've got the 10mm tube, though. But, if you've got the 8mm, and it's still doing it - something must be wrong. The BPT may be going bad for real, or the EGR valve is sticking.

Good luck, and damn OBDII...

The dealer should fix your car and replace the BPT tube to the newer one under warrantry. A TSB came out on it in 97-98.
