The SR20DE spark plug gap... if you have looked on the hood of your car, instead of finding exact numbers, it just says no gaping is required. Thats great that no gapping is required, but what if you have a plug that is already pregapped?

I've heard numerous people say the gap should be at .044 for platinums, but no exact data.

I just ran across this in the FSM:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t188/covertrussian/Sentra%20SE-L/Maintenance/Spark%20Plugs/SR20DESparkplugGapping.jpg

After looking at the some more pages in the FSM, it turns out that is for the Conventional type plugs, not Platinum-tipped Type

Has anyone tried to play around with the gaps and see which works the best for HP/MPG?

When I first got the plugs, I had them left alone, then a member suggested .031 - .035, so I changed the gap to that, I don't recall seeing a difference, but that could be because I drove on the normal gap for about 2-3 days and the ECU didn't get to adjust to them yet.

You will have to drive it for at least a week before you notice anything.

The bad thing about the self learning ECU is the fact that by the time the ECU adapts towards the change you gradually got used to it. So it's not like just a burst of power right of way hehe.

So does anyone know the stock Gap for Platinum plugs?

Its going to be the same for the plats.
as far as pregapped, dont forget about manufactuting tolerances. i would stick to about the .34 like Nissan suggests and unless you are nitrous or turbo, set any new plugs you buy to that.

Sweet I will gap them to .34 then :biggthump

So this is good for both 15* Timing and bumped timing right?

Thanks Eric, much appreciated :biggthump, back to the seriousness...

I did some playing around on the dyno on my old B16 hatch. The honda liked to be gapped around .035 or so. I've always kept it around there afterwards since the sr and b series use the same plug.

Thanks for the heads up, I will try .34 or .35 this week :biggthump

Maybe he meant 1.1mm = 0.043"

"mine are at .43.44"; "I will gap them to .34 then"

.34 - .44" is more like this: :D

NGK BKR6E-11s require no gapping. Pre-gapped to .035"

That's all I use since I refuse to pay the $$ for the platinum plugs and most stores carry them.

Edit:
And the HP "gains" you might get from gapping are so negligible you will not even notice. At best you are talking 2-3hp.

True, but thats one of those factors that I would like to rule out for HP/MPG gains :biggthump

BigB, GoFastDepot.com has the Platinum plugs for about $2. Thats were I got mine. Thanks Serban! :biggthump

Very true,
But its not specificially the gains you see from the gap being correct, its the gains from the resulting correct alfa readings the ecm will see from complete combstion.
In other words correct gap+correct AFR= powergains everywhere.

I've had some that in the past weren't spot on.

And in terms of power, ever little bit counts, especially when it's free.

Funny, because under the hood of my car, it said replace with platinum plugs gapped at .044.

I am really not trying to argue about this. Its beating a dead horse at this point. I work for Nissan,I have all the refrence materials anyone would ever want

91-93 plug gap is .031-.035
94 and later. gap is .039-.043.

All I can say is that for MY car in MY engine ( a 93 with 175k) the small gap worked best.
This car did a round trip to Daytona from VA in one weekend
just won 8 autocrosses, 6 of them in a row, ran 5 HPDE weekends and is driven almost daily.

Oh wait so the the high port it's: .031-.035
And low port its: .039-.043.

I have a 99 SE-L, so def. low port. Should I do .034 or .039?

So this is good for both 15* Timing and bumped timing right?

Is your car stock, boosted, or nitrous? I boosted a US SR20 and I have to, ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO use a colder plug, and I gap them at 0.028. Stick to NGK, this is the recommended plug for the SR20 for a good reason. NGK V-Power Racing is an awesome plug and inexpensive (standard core, not platinum is what I use). When I was stock, I advanced my timing a few degrees, gapped my NGKs to 0.035 and racked up many victories. I felt the power difference with only advancing the timing and giving my car a tune-up.
