: resetting the ECU
metro_se-r 07-18-2002, 12:27 AM I just installed the CAI I got from RaserX. At first I didn't reconnect the temp sensor, I just left it out. But now since I relocated it and reconnected again, for some reason the check engine light still stays on. Does anyone know how I can reset the ECU, cause the light is starting to irritate me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UcLaGeE 07-18-2002, 12:57 AM i think you can just disconnect the battery (negative terminal) for awhile (say 30 mins) and then that should reset it??? Thats how it is for all cars i think... someone please verify this with me...
DubuRX 07-18-2002, 01:04 AM That's right as far as I know... not sure if it's positive or negative terminal thou...
spdracerUT 07-18-2002, 01:17 AM When working with batteries, always disconnect the negative first. And the procedure for pulling codes and resetting the ecu is on se-r.net and I wrote it up on here to so you can search the archives here too.

metro_se-r 07-18-2002, 12:32 PM Well, I disconnected the battery over night and it worked fine. Got in the car today, started her up, and NO light! Thanks for your help guys.
96BlkSE-R 07-18-2002, 01:38 PM You can clear the codes in the ECU by putting the ECU in 'self-diagnostic' mode then resetting it after the codes have shown themselves. My Haynes manual (I have the FSM, too) has the procedure very well described.
It's easier than disconnecting the battery....

how is getting down on the floorboard, unbolting the ecu from the car, turning the ignition on and turning the screw to see the diag. codes easier than undoing a couple batt harness'?

Thats what I thought. I have the Haynes manual and I took a look at it. I didn't need to run the codes because I knew what was wrong with the car, I just needed to get rid of the light.
wolfcri 07-19-2002, 12:45 AM unless you need to DIAGNOSE a problem that you are unsure of, the battery disconnect method is the way to go
spdracerUT 07-19-2002, 02:39 AM Well, I can pull the ecu, get the codes and reset it faster than it takes me to reset all of my radio stations, audio settings, and the clock on my head unit if I disconnect the battery :) By the way, I don't even have the plastic cover over the ecu anymore.

DubuRX 07-19-2002, 06:27 AM ahhh.. 6 of one, half a dozen of another... whatever floats your boat
96BlkSE-R 07-19-2002, 09:40 AM I found that using a 1" screwdriver bit, I can trigger the diagnostic mode by reaching behind the console from the passenger's footwell. And, I keep that little bit in the ashtray of the car just for that purpose. So, I can reset codes MUCH faster than disconnecting the battery, waiting, resetting my radio, etc.
Man, I didn't mean to start a huge controversy. Sorry :o
NismoPC 07-19-2002, 11:12 AM There have been several discussions on ECU resetting and the end result was, yes you can reset the ECU by removing the negative battery for a period of time then reconnect, but it might not accurately reset all functions within the ECU properly. There is also the OBD-I -vs- OBD-II ECU differences.
The best way to reset an ECU is to reset it at the screw. It is satisfying knowing that it is properly done that way.
Here is some more on this:

martin_g34 07-19-2002, 03:04 PM My MIL light just came on and I disconnected the negative terminal over night and the light was still on the next day. So I guess I'm just gonna have to pull the code. But I thought it was weird that the light never turned off.

IT'S POSSESSED! CALL THE PRIEST!!
That is strange. Perhaps there is some nasty capacitor in the ECU keeping it alive. I dunno...
I'm installing a G20 ECU in my 96 SE-R tonight, and I think the first thing I'll do before I crank her up is reset the ECU, just in case...
blairellis 07-27-2002, 12:22 AM so say you were going to have your emissions thing done (which i dont have in this state thank goodness) that day.....wouldnt it be wise to do this if you were running something that would trigger a MIL light? this is sortof a hint hint for all of you
