ok so my clutch cable has become really gritchy to the point i cant even get the car in gear...but it has an easy fix: turn the car off and start it up again! what is going on here? the clutch can either be gritchy on the first start or start getting gritchy while im driving, to fix it all i have to do is shut off the engine and start again and voila the clutch pedal is smooth as butter. engagement has always been perfect. this cant be a cable problem can it? only happens once a week or so and i drive it daily. this is a real problem when im in freeway traffic and i have to turn the car on and off quickly. regarding the cable where is the procedure to replace it, i looked on ser.net but all it has is cable adjustment, and i searched the mailing list archive but came up with 80+ useless posts. faq had nothing on it. some direction would be appreciated. a tech write-up posted in the problems section of ser.net would be helpful for future users. thanks!

Since it only happens every once in a while, I'm not so sure that that's a clutch cable problem. How long has your current clutch cable been in there? If it IS the cable though, at least it's a relatively cheap fix. I think $50 for the cable from the dealer. Don't know muh about the install, though.

If it isn't all the time,. I would have to bet it is the throw out bearing, either it is not greased proplerly and is binding or it is wore out.

ive only had the car since 120K on so dont know if the cable has ever been changed. if it is the throw out bearing wouldnt i hear a noise, or wouldnt it be constant, would the clutch be so smooth? im guessing the tranny has to be dropped to do that...what kind of $$ am i looking at? thanks.

for the throw out bearing you have to drop the tranny, yeah. For a cable you can try that for under $30 from mossyperformance.com and it is a 10 minute job. The throw out bearing can still work fine if it is not lubed properly, you just get that sticky feelingin the pedal. My buddies car did that and after checking everything, swapping cables and all that, we tore it open. The shaft of the throw out bearing was fairly dry so we lubed it with some redline synthetic lube and sure enough it has worked fine. It may or may not be your problem.
