: top mount a gti-r ic on a bbdet engine??
stankser 07-19-2002, 06:19 PM I'm thinking that when i eventually go turbo i want the bbdet engine and i want to keep the intercooler topmounted....Can you use the intercooler from the gti-r engine on the bbdet ???.....just wondering if this has ever been tried since the gtir intercooler is much larger...
I here how some people keep their bbdet engines topmounted and i'm assuming that they are using the stock det intercooler...is this right???...
SeattleSE R 07-19-2002, 06:36 PM If you're trying to pinch every penny, then the top mount will work. It's just not very safe unless you have a hoodscoop and lots of vents to let out heat from the engine bay.
CowboyDren 07-19-2002, 07:37 PM The piping is wrong due to differences in the 'R's intake manifold. I don't think this is a great idea, but it could work. It'd just cost too much money.
sleeping 91ser 07-19-2002, 11:24 PM i would say that your better off just buying a cheap front mount like a starion and getting new endtakes for it and running custom piping than doing that..

ITR_KILLR 07-19-2002, 11:59 PM any intercooler you top mount, no matter which one is going to absorb a lot of heat from the engine (even with hood scoops)making it less efficient than about any front mount. just my opinion.
ktrends 07-20-2002, 12:18 AM Oh no not this topic again!
stankser 07-20-2002, 12:02 PM well i already knew about the heat issue..i was just thinking since the gti-r intercooler is much larger compared to the bbdet intercooler, it would be more efficient....
CowboyDren 07-20-2002, 06:30 PM Not really. I mean, yes, it can put off more heat, conversely I bet it soaks just as fast and is capable of doing an even more viscious job of heating the intake charge. If you're going TMIC, I'd stick with the small one and get a water kit.
SeattleSE R 07-20-2002, 06:32 PM You can run the biggest intercooler you can on the top of the motor, but it will still be less efficient than a front mount. Any intercooler needs some sort of fresh air flowing to it.
FMIC. Just do it.
CowboyDren 07-20-2002, 06:43 PM $1100 is a lot of money, but you just can't get more idiot-proof than the Hot Shot SR20DET installation kit, which features a Big Honkin' (tm) HKS core, mandrel-bent pipes everywhere, all of the clamps and couplers you need, and comes with a freakin' 3" downpipe for the turbine discharge that works with a T25 or a T28 and stock or a 3" cat. You'll get a little more lag (more pipes to charge before the intake manifold gets boost), but you'll increase the reliability and the power potential of the engine so much that I can hardly argue against it at all.
dr.sr20de 07-20-2002, 07:11 PM Does anyone know how much the HS intercooler kits costs?
CowboyDren 07-21-2002, 01:32 AM Eleven Hundred Dollars. Plus Shipping.
dr.sr20de 07-21-2002, 01:49 AM Thanks, I figured it would be on the expensive side.
SERprise In WV 07-22-2002, 12:21 AM Take that GTi-R intercooler, and put it up front. Flip it over on its side, so the inlet/outlet point to the left-right. The GTi-R IC is almost a square shape, so you'll never get all of the surface area out in the cool breeze because your bumper opening is rectangular. But, you'll get a good chunk of it out there.
Call up Summit/JCW/Jeg's/whomever, and order up about $70 worth of mandrel bends.
Voila. Instant efficient intercooler setup for not a lot of money. And yes, I have that setup going on my car very soon.
Or...you can have new endtanks made and welded on to the GTi-R IC for $100-200, depending on who does the work. Still, it's hard to beat.
JMHO.
Rockwood 07-22-2002, 12:22 AM hey ktrends, what was your 1/8 ET and MPH? i think i may have beaten you had my wheel not come off (broke lug studs at the line because i was running wheel spacers, wheel came off after the finish line, i aborted about 3/4 track, ran a 13.3@90, hehe) i ran 13 psi and C16 and ran a 8.0@88 in the 1/8th
also, dude that thing looks nice, hardly beater status.
and, please guys, dont spend ANY money on a TMIC setup above whatever your car came with, save that money for a front mount setup, hell, it only costs about $70 more in piping, etc.
ITR_KILLR 07-22-2002, 12:40 AM are you runnin 13psi on 370's???? stock maf???

You got me beat! My 1/8th was 8.1 @ 86.1
What size slicks where you running?! sounds like it was hooking hard!
I soon will be going with the forge unit on my car, want to upgrade to the T28, bigger injectors and maf before that though.
Rockwood 07-22-2002, 01:00 AM same MT 14x8x20's
they threw some VHT down right before my run and blow torched the rubber away
and yes, stock MAF and 370's, C16 does wonders huh?
Rockwood 07-22-2002, 01:03 AM next time out it will be 15x8x22's, brand new
also shifted at ~7000 rpm instead of 7500
ktrends 07-22-2002, 01:09 AM Kickass! Congrats on the awesome run!
Glad you didn't run into a major problem, losing a wheel and crashing into the wall or somthing along those lines.
Thanks for the comment about my car BTW.
Now if i could just get it to run as fast as it looks :D :D :D
