: Head Gasket Question?
Sr20 B12 07-20-2002, 01:34 AM How thick of a head gasket I would be needed if the engine is bored to 87mm and use 87mm JE forged pistons with a 9:1 compression ratio on the GTiR motor? Do anyone think that there is a way to bring the compression back to a safe enough level to run high boost?
Sr20 B12 07-20-2002, 01:22 PM ............. And this is where you guys are supposed to respond..........:)
sleeping 91ser 07-20-2002, 01:43 PM well you can also do shit like swain coating the pistons which will help you run the higher compression more safely and with a thicker head gasket you should be able to run some higher boost... Look at some of big boosts old posts he has a 10-4-1 motor that he was biulding.

What are you calling high boost? 9.0:1 compression is ok... just run race gas after about 350whp... You would have to do that anyway..

We'll this isn't for me, it's for my uncle. He already has the pistons swan coated, but just waiting to drop them in. Right now he's only worrying about head gasket thickness for his application. I guess for him high boost will be 15 - 18psi on a S15 BB turbo.
james vick 07-20-2002, 11:31 PM If there are forged pistons he should be ok with that boost. I've seen the stock se-r pistons take that much with no problems at all at 9.5.
jbanach77 07-20-2002, 11:52 PM you don't have to run race gas after 350whp. i know i never did and i was around 430whp. i have plenty of 750whp+ supra friends that run on 93 pump gas.

unlucky 07-21-2002, 12:25 AM Did you run 72lb injectors? What compression ratio? Reason I ask is because I was told that after about 350whp you have to run either Fuel or water injection.. Please enlighten me.. I am about to be done with my setup and I'm wondering it's limits. I have the 3-bar 50lb Cobra MAF setup.. T3/T04E... 3" exhaust... yada-yada..

sleeping 91ser 07-21-2002, 02:12 AM the three bar program may also limit you to 350, you might have to run a 4 bar for after that, your not going to max out your injectors or fuel pump at that level.....

SucKit 07-21-2002, 02:35 AM Well Mario you will see my ***** on Sat. Im running 9.0 wisecos, swain coated. The only thing is the headgasket. The gti-r runs a 1.2mm HG. While the stock de one is .6mm thick. I personally believe that both are the same headgasket except for thickness, so make sure you uncle has at least a 1.2 in there.
ITR_KILLR 07-22-2002, 12:46 AM who makes a FWD DET head gasket?
jbanach77 07-22-2002, 07:08 PM nope i didn't run 72lb hours. i ran 55 lb hour injectors, no water injection, no race fuel or octane booster of any kind. just everyday gas i get at amoco. i used my t3t4 60-1 hi flow bb turbo that made those numbers. never did i ever have race gas or octane booster in my tank the entire time i owned the car.
i look at fuel this way, if you have to race someone with race fuel your not totally confident in your car. all the numbers my car made are on 93 oct gas, so i know if i have to run someone i can go to the nearest gas station and fuel up an not say well give me a hour to drive 100 miles to get gas then i'll run you. that is just how i feel about that. and guys that use race gas on dynos are another story. they only make those numbers once on the dyno or at the track, not EVERYDAY like the car should.

The DE, Bluebird DET, and GTiR DET all run 1.2mm headgaskets from the factory. The DE and Bluebird DET headgasket are interchangable while the GTiR has a differnt headgasket.

Cometic, HKS, Greddy, HKS, and Tomei all make headgaskets for the DE and Bluebird DET. HKS & Tomei both make headgaskets for the GTiR DET.
