: LSD options?
PULSSSAR 07-20-2002, 11:53 AM Okay, I really do need some kind of LSD solution. I'm running the DET with an open wheeler, and you can imagine how much my autocrossing sucks.
I need a solution.
I've thought of, Quaife (no longer make them), Kaaz (cant find suitable model), PhantomGrip (looks like a good option?).. or the Gti pulsar 1.8SR LSD gearbox (lsd doesnt work that well in it)...
Can anyone suggest a solution to me?... damn open wheelers
James
ITR_KILLR 07-20-2002, 01:14 PM I'm thinkin of gettin a phantom grip myself, $300 sounds very nice for some good traction
dont ever get a phantom grip. technically it isnt a LSD, its some sort of spring loaded mechanism and it tends to grab very abruptly and at weird times(like in the middle of a turn) making your car handle funny and causing it to understeer.
PULSSSAR 07-21-2002, 09:46 AM So you've use/tested a phantom grip? Where do you get this info from? So it's not really that effective. Hrmmm.
Going back to my original post. What do you recommend?
Thanks, James
ITR_KILLR 07-22-2002, 12:32 AM damn, that sucks...glad you told me so
silverser99 07-22-2002, 01:41 AM Yeah I heard it was nice for Straight Line Drag Racing but thats all I heard
ITR_KILLR 07-22-2002, 01:53 AM straight line drag is what i would use it for.....would it have daily drivablility problems?
i never tested any aftermarket LSD's on a FWD but i tested it on a RWD. NISMO LSD on a S13 to be exact. Feels great and a lot better then a stock S13 LSD or N/A 300zx LSD. I guess this info doesnt really help at all because LSD's on FWD's and RWD's act and handle very differently but its just for your information.
ITR_KILLR 07-22-2002, 02:31 AM anybody runnin a phantom grip for drag?

So what you're saying is that you're dissing the Phantom Grip without ever having run it?

Sounds like it.
Options are in order of cost,
1 Phantom Grip
2 Stock Nissan Tranny swap (I paid 550tranny+55 for the axle)
3 Nissmo LSD for non-lsd tranny (about 750-900, Get the parts dept to call nissan motorsports.
4 Quaife (pry it out of my cold dead hands)
The nismo diff is going to be far better then the stock VSLD in the stock tranny. Now that I have swapped a quaife I would not be afraid of doing the nismo into the non lsd tranny. It is not that hard IF you are carefull.
Edit: This is for a front wheel drive tranny isn't it?

You can get a Nismo item for the non-LSD boxes? For real? Sh*t eh. I want it.
Can you give me a URL or email or phone num? I'm in Australia, which makes it harder, but I badly require LSD. My racing is suffering. I'm loosing so much time.
Thanks, James

Phone # is 1 310 538 2610
Part number is 38420RS360
I would consider calling Brain at Courtesy Nissan and seeing if he can get it for you. He may alread know how to handle the overseas shipping. Also, Please post results I am very curious how this things works compared to the VSLD. Do a search for LSD on the forum and you can see several sections of info on this diff. To my knowledge no one has bought it yet on the forum. It is a little noiser then the stock diff but only when swithching directions and turning really tight corners.
Brain # is 1800-527-1909 or search the net for Courtesy Nissan and get a regular number because you are oversees. Brian is also on the forum and you can PM him. I think his logon is "brian" Just look for the one in Texas.

Is that an offer? ;)
I'd almost kill for a Quaffe for Grover's ITS Sentra SE-R. :D

No, but thanks for pausing to think things thru and not acting on the impulse.:) . I was feeling just like you before I bought this thing from Ben.
geo91ser and 98sr20ve, please read my post again...

let me repeat again just in case you didnt catch that, PHANTOM GRIP ISNT AN ACTUAL LSD! Got it?? yes i have tested it on a civic with a B16A1 motor.

Shoe,
thanks for pointing out to everyone what 99% of the people in here already knew! (including geo91ser and 98sr20ve).
Regarding PhantomGrip I personally do not care if "technically it isnt a LSD". If it can give me 80% of LSD functionality for 40% the price then it is a worthy alternative to a "technically proper LSD" and I could care less what it is or is NOT.
Now that we all GOT IT, both geo91ser and 98sr20ve asked/postulated based on exactly what was written in your posts up to then. That you dished PhantomGrip without testing it. Even If I read your post again and again and again, I do not see where you stated that you have actually tested it. In fact, you clearly stated that your experience was based on a RWD equipped LSD.
Now in your last post you actually say you have tested PhantomGrip on a Honda which is fair enough and entitles you to a negative opinion on PhantomGrip.
The line "yes i have tested it on a civic with a B16A1 motor" should be your only reply instead of the "Got it?" post.
Got it?
Chris
kiwi_nx-r 07-23-2002, 05:19 AM I did some research before I did my conversion, and priced a Quaife LSD to fit a non LSD box. The price was about $2000 NZ, which was comparable to a Nismo one at the time. In the end I just went with a GTI VLSD box, which is holding up OK, but I mainly drag, as opposed to track work, so I would love to get a nice Torque bias LSD..... Pulsssar, if you end up importing something to Aus, let me know and I might tag on to your order to save us a bit of freight.

Help me understand what a GTI VSLD box is? Is it basically a FWD tranny with the stock VSLD. When I hear the word "Pulsar" I automatically think 4wd,Turbo and such. I know they make other versions, I just know nothing about them.
Also, to fan the flames a bit you could also use the Phantom Grip and use stock VSLD at the same time. For a drag car that might not be a bad choice. Other then that I really think my option # 3 is a better deal then # 2 in every way except cost. But the cost is not that far out of line for what you get.

1) You're a rude SOB. This is the second time you've been rude to me because you seem to think it helps you make your point and that you are really really smart.
2) I'm not sure I agree about it not being a LSD. I saw an episode of Dream Car Garage on Speed Channel where they went through the various types of LSDs. One of them did almost exactly the same thing as the Phantom Grip.
