: Please help me!! car still low on power
mpg9999 07-20-2002, 02:01 PM I put my car on the dyno again today, got about 121 hp. I have a CAI, Hotshot gen 5 header, courtesy midpipe w/ stock muffler, and nology wires. I put down around 110 with just the intake. Now, here is what I have down so far trying to fix my low hp numbers, but none of this has helped: Dist cap/rotor, wires, plugs and fuel filter. My timing is set at 15. It's not the nology wires causing me to lose power because iv also used nissan oem wires and that didnt work. My Cat is not clogged, i took it off and checked. I did a compression check and that checks out. My MAF has been reground and my o2 sensor replaced. My gas mileage is fine and I dont have any drivability problems. My plugs are gapped to spec. My fuel filter did clog up and start leaking recently, so I just replaced it again (had maybe 5k on it?), but this dyno run was done with the new filter which has a few hundred miles on it. Right now im wodnering if my fuel injectors could be clogged. What do you guys think? I did put a thing of redline fuel injector cleaner in there on the last tank befor i went down to the dyno. Please people, im out ideas, tell me what you think. TIA

oooohhhh.. i've heard bad things about putting in injector cleaner stuff... I've heard it doesn't agree with the sr20 to well... but, maybe I'm wrong... check your injectors just to be safe.

Fuel injector cleaner does not work on our type of fuel injectors. TO really clean them, you need to get them ultrasonically cleaned at a place like RC Engineering.
TREYDEE 07-20-2002, 07:11 PM One thing that will help get,2.25 piping stright pipe with no cat and no resonator with some kind of exhaust ,thrust me that should help some
SmoothDaddyFig 07-20-2002, 08:01 PM Well, you're going down the list correctly.
Next item up for bid is the injectors.
I would get them cleaned or get new ones.
Peanuthead 07-20-2002, 08:34 PM Hey Mpg9999 give Jason Garrett a call and get some injectors from him and have them sent off to RC Engineering. I have the website and info if you need it.
mpg9999 07-20-2002, 09:00 PM black200sxser:
Its a 91.
RaSER X and llaprad1:
I used redline fuel injector cleaner which is supposed to be safe for our pintle-less injectors.
TEYDEE:
I have a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust, but i do have the stock muffler. But even so, I should have much higher numbers.
SmoothDaddyFit and Peanuthead:
Yeah, I actually just got some used injectors from Rosen and I think ill send those out to be cleaned, or install them and send mine out to be cleaned. I recall somebody posting about a company that a lot of the Buick GN people where using to get there injectors cleaned and it was pretty cheap, anyone remember the name?
Thanks everyone, keep those suggestions coming.
92SE-R 07-21-2002, 04:02 AM What gear did you dyno at and was it a Dynojet 248c?
mpg9999 07-22-2002, 02:22 AM 4th gear and yes.
92SE-R 07-22-2002, 11:18 AM All the all motor guys dyno in 3rd gear. Turbo guys dyno in 4th gear.
dgerryts 07-22-2002, 07:45 PM Not all of us all motor guys dyno in 3rd gear. We did ours in 4th
one thing i dont think you havent checked is your compression. check that out first before you start droping big money ;)
Dragoon262 07-23-2002, 12:42 AM sorry to get in the thread asking for help too but i cant post yet lol,
well heres the perdicament, i have an nx2000, i just spent like all my cash replacing my stuff fixing my car and painting it, cause someone f'd it up when they broke in and took my stuff, (would have been much cheaper if they just broke the window)
anyway , i want to increase my power at an affordable price, i should be getting my test pipt to replace my cat very soon, and preferrably with stuff u cant notice much cause untill im fully established in college my father wont let me do jack to my car so i need to get around him knowing for now lol,
but any ill have the test pipe, i have a borla exhaust, ngk spark wires, a modified hi flow intake,a rebuilt engine that was bored out a bit and my timing is advanced a lot, beyond the markings(no ping! woot) so any suggestions for more mods that i can afford for now would be much appriciated.
mpg9999 07-23-2002, 09:25 PM I did check the compression, thats not the problem.
how big is your exhaust piping. anything over 2 1/2 inches would cause you to loose power. and if thats not it i would go injectors next. check them with a ohm meter. anything below 12ohms is bad and you should replace. easier way to do it is run the engine and remove one plug wire at time. you should notice the same amount of power drop in every cylinder.
;)

what do mean by "bored out"? did you overbore the cylinder head? if so...how much you bored it by and what did you replace the old pistons w/? im thinking about doing the same...but im having problems finding new pistons that will fit the bored cylinder head
Sunder 07-25-2002, 05:44 AM How's your air fuel ratio? Checked that?
Chemically ideal burning ratio is 14.7:1, but realistically, good power is made between 11.5- 13.5 or so. Any richer or leaner, and you start having problems.
Also, how many miles on your engine? Perhaps the engine is caked up with carbon. About a litre of water sprayed VERY slowly down your intake (Take about 5 minutes to use that amount of the water, while the engine is reving at about 3000rpm) will get rid of a lot of carbon. If your engine has ever misfired, then it's likely that you have caked up your engine.
Maybe a silly question to ask, but is your clutch slipping? If so, obviously a dyno will just see less power.
Finally, how does the car feel on the road? If it feels fine, then maybe the problem is the calibration on the Dyno.
mpg9999 07-25-2002, 08:32 PM I havnt checked my A/F ratio, so I dont know what it is, and I dont know how to check it. My car has 113k miles on it. How does spraying water in it remove the carbon? Iv never heard of doing this, but if it will help, ill do it. My clutch is nearing the end of its life. When I shift after redlineing it, it takes a second or 2 for the clutch completly grab and the engine speed to drop down. I would notice if it where slipping once its engaged, wouldnt I? The car feels fine on the road. The dyno is fine, other SR20's where there and had no problems. Another thing, my hp line kinda jumps up and down, its very shaky.
92SE-R 07-25-2002, 09:57 PM If your power curve is very shaky, then you are probably detonating. A lot of Classics have had fuel pumps go bad. I'd highly recommend replacing your fuel pump if it is the original one with 100+k miles.
Also, the clutch slipping will definitely affect dyno numbers.
