This is in the "Contributor Accounts" sticky:
The forum has been around since early 2000. It started with a handful of dedicated people and has grown and expanded many times since then. This growth continues, and as a result operating costs are rising. In the spirit of getting something in return for your support, the contributor-level account was born. Money from these accounts will go to the forum and its operating costs, which includes monthly hosting fees and hardware/software upgrades.
Since Vertical Scope (parent of autoforums.com) (http://www.verticalscope.com/aboutus/index.html) is a "privately held corporation," the bolded phrase (in the quote) probably isn't true anymore.
I would hope that the operating costs were counted in their overhead.
Can someone revise this so future potential "contributors" (as well as current ones) be informed that they are buying a premium account, not necessarily helping in maintenance?
