ive just been on the forum a little while , but i can see you quys know what your talking about, i have a question about my exaust, first of all, i made the mistake of gutting my cat, i have a ractive muffler, i like the way it sounds up to about 3000, then it starts snapping and popping , and when i down shift it sounds like shit, i know this is probley from gutting , but is there anyway for me to get that loud sound with no snapping and stuff, thanx alott

do you have stock piping? gutting the cat would be the problem, an N/A 4 cyl with no/gutted cat is always gonna be loud. best bet is to throw a good cat on there, or the stock muffler

well, how loud do you want it? I personally think my Greddy is loud as hell (got about 36 sq. ft. of dynamat in my trunk to make it quieter). HKS is quieter from what I've heard from other people.

Getting a new cat will probably help a lot. A random tech one isn't too expensive. Heck, just putting on a new cat might fix all of your problems and you won't even have to worry about the muffler.

I have 2 1/4 piping and a catco converter with a magnaflow muffler and my car is loud!!! I really dont mind it all that much it pops and backfires between gears kinda cool sounds like an all out race car sometimes. In some rpm's the muffler is a little to raspy sounding but I can deal with it.

Nope. My Greddy is 1000000000 times QUIETER than any HKS exhaust. Your problem is the $50 ractive muffler. You get what you pay for...my greddy costs like $550 new, and sounds great. You can't expect a $80 brand new muffler to sound just as good. No offense, I'm not sure how much the ractive was, but I know it's going to sound like crap. If you want the exhaust to sound good, buy some headers, a GReddy SP full cat-back, and a random tech cat and you will be set!

would getting bigger pipes give it a better sound, if so, what kind of sound?

i have a magnaflow muffler and i **** it sounds real racey not to raspy it is loud but its a good loud sounds like a old 70s japan car like a 240 i used to have

Bigger pipe will give you a deeper sound, but don't oversize it. The GReddy is 2.36'' if you are wondering. Too big will make so there is not enough pressure and you will lose power.

None of you have Glasspacks? I run 2.25" piping with a catco cat, thrush glasspack, mandrel bends and a dynomax ultraflow and the exhaust is so quiet! You only hear it when getting on it and that is a perfect mix of my PR CAI and the AEBS header and the exhaust. If it is raspy or tin sounding add a glasspack right off the cat!

It's not the muffler. Our cars don't sound good without the cat, which isn't a restriction anyway.

Put it back on.

Put a cat back in - even a stock one will do unless you're shoving air through the engine.

I tried removing the forward resonator on my car - it went back on after about two days on the highway. My feet and butt went to sleep from the droning - and that was with a stock rear section.

BTW, Crono - and please don't take this personally, as that is not how it is meant - but the HKS is quieter in dB's than the Greddy. They are near equivalent pieces in performance, and the Greddy has just slightly less restriction (backpressure) than the HKS. I've done my homework on this one, since that will be the next (and nearly the last) step on my ride for now.

Its ok I'm not taking it personally. I have heard both and I think mine is quieter. I also thought this was the general consensus around here? I don't know I'm glad I bought my greddy at any rate.

It's all good. Opinions are why they make more than one product for any given purpose.

When my stock muffler goes out, I'll probably opt for the HKS, just because I like the deeper rumbly sound it produces. I've heard both, and it doesn't seem as loud as the Greddy to me.

Plus, I just like the HKS tip better - JMHO.

Unless the glasspack is a perforated straight-thru setup, it can produce TONS of back pressure.

I intend to run the resonator that comes with the HKS, when I decide to change the exhaust - or the stock rear decides it's time for me to change it.

I have a 2.25" catback, with 18" louvered resonator, stock cat, and an Arospeed muffler, and my car is really quiet. People even tell me that its too quiet.

Just going by what Kojima says and what I have learned over the past years, the louvered resonator is causing a lot of back pressure, which in turn would be silencing the exhaust quite a bit.

Just for shit's and giggles and if money permitted, I'd love to see what performance gains (if any) you would get if you ran a straight pipe in place of the resonator or a perforated glass-pack.

Your dyno runs already show impressive numbers, just wondering if they could be a bit higher without the louvered back-pressure.
