anybody ever try and quiet down their air compressor, like w/ a filter on top or something. mine is just too loud, lol.

loud like what? like a hiss? mine is quiet, or at least I don't hear it from the cabin, maybe yours need some service

we have a box made of peg board around the one at work, that seems to help some

its a 30 gallon air compressor, no hiss, the motor is just loud as balls. i was thinking some type of box to put around the top and fill it with some insulation or something, or some type of air muffler or baffling. idk.

just make sure there is still some air flow threw it

I've heard that a majority of the noise comes from the intake. I guess you could try to muffle it somehow?

If it's a diaphragm-style compressor, just buy a piston-style model... :D

Seriously though, piston compressors are a lot quieter, especially the larger displacement ones.

Other than that, a box or closet for it will shut it up a little. BTW, don't forget to check/change the oil in it...

What type of air compressor do you have?
I have one that the motor and pump are one unit. This thing is SO LOUD that I end up never using it. I even tried putting it outside. I do not know of any way to shut that thing up.
I now have one that the electric motor drives a belt that turns a piston style pump. I love it. You can have a conversation next to it when running.
Look into this style, more CFM and quiet(er).

Put a hose on the intake and run the hose outside. Just putting a three foot hose on mine helped a lot. If it wasn't for the intake my compressor would be quiet. 30 gal piston type husky from Home Depot.

I wonder if that makes it work harder/flow less CFM...?

I don't think so. Does your engine work harder when you put a CAI on?

I tried putting a little K&N filter on the intake and it didn't do anything. Maybe I can build a box around the filter...ala OEM intake box.

That's the thing. There is a point of diminishing returns with everything. Try sucking soda through a 3' straw and it's a lot harder than through a 6" straw.

With the CAI, you're not increasing tract length by much (stock goes to the headlight anyway). With a 3' hose on the end of a compressor, it's a lot bigger difference...
