: Fidanza and CEL's
kafn8ed 07-23-2002, 02:20 AM I put in a flywheel this weekend and got the dreaded Check Engine Light. So I called Fidanza today. When I talked to the guy there, he said he hadn't heard of any problems due to the flywheel and the later model cars. They had made some changes to the flywheel before to try to keep this from happening, and thought all was well. I'm calling back tomorrow, or the day after, and I'd like to be able to tell him a number of people who've had this problem. I also gave him the website to look it up himself. So if you have a Fidanza flywheel, and a CEL, let me know. Maybe we can get something fixed. A lot of times it seems the aftermarket customer service sucks, but this time it seems we may have someone willing to listen. So let's speak up.

Storm88000 07-23-2002, 03:02 AM Assuming you have a B14, you have to expect the CEL light if you use the Fidanza. It doesn't have the crank angle sensor connection, the B13's do not have this. I have the Fidanza and have the CEL, but I knew it was coming before I installed it.
kafn8ed 07-23-2002, 03:17 AM Yes, I have a B14. And yes, I'd heard I was going to get a CEL. I'd also called Fidanza before I got it, and they told me it had been fixed. When I called back, they said they hadn't heard about any more problems. So if we can get them to fix it, at least no-one else will have this. And we can say that at least some companies do listen to their customers. There's been a lot of talk on the board in the past few months about customer service w/ aftermarket companies. Here's one who seems at least willing to listen.

ThomasSr20 07-23-2002, 03:48 AM I have the Fidanza flywheel on my car and yes my CEL is on.
Doen't really bother me but if i could get it fix i would give it a try
SuperblkStalion 07-23-2002, 03:53 AM i also got teh CEL thing, but mine goes on and off. i can only assume it is the flywheel or the fact that i have no AIV that causes it to come on

Blue93G20 07-23-2002, 04:58 AM IS this common on non obd-II cars. I have a 93.5 (highport SR20)Infiniti G20 and have just bought a Fidanza flywheel and this isn't very exciting to hear right befor install.
scmser 07-23-2002, 07:25 AM The CRANK angle position sensor is on later model se-r's. The CEL/MIL/check engine light does NOT affect performance (stated in another thread by Andreas Miko). Your CAMSHAFT angle position sensor is the one that matters. It is built into your distributor and is of no concern to this thread. AIV and EGR removal shouldn't cause an MIL. These items are mechanical, not electrical, the ecu never knows the difference.
scmser 07-23-2002, 07:26 AM If the light bothers you, pull the bulb. Just check your ecu for codes every 2-4 weeks.

Yes the egr will cause a light but that is off topic for this thread. I just didn't want people to think that the EGR would not cause a light (its code #32). I don't know about AIV but I thought it could throw a code for that also.
Shoes59 07-23-2002, 08:31 AM I installed a Fidanza when I did the VE swap and I don't have a MIL. This may or may not be relevant as I haven't payed much attention to wether it's an OBD1 or OBD2 problem. I don't even recall what OBD the VE has ;-)

I don't know if the VE is OBD I or II either, but Classics are OBDI. AFAIK, all OBDII vehicles have two oxygen sensors.

...... and suck. ;)
scmser 07-23-2002, 04:30 PM 98sr20ve,
I removed my AIV and plugged off the egr/bpt. No codes, no problems. This is on an OBD I classic w/high port primera motor (US intake manifold). If cams can trigger codes in OBD II cars then plugging or removing EGR's probably will as well.
Excuse my ignorance, I don't and will never own an OBD II car.
If anyone knows of any problems AIV and EGR removal can/will cause on my car, feel free to inform me. I was under the impression there was no harm in it.
kafn8ed 07-25-2002, 02:10 AM Update. I talked to Tom again today at Fidanza. He said they are definately going to look further into this. It won't do a lot for those of us who already have one, but maybe it won't happen to later buyers. The only thing I saw when I compared the two before installing, is that the Fidanza's starter ring is narrower than the stock flywheel. It is steel though, which should work fine, I assume. Oh well, CEL or not, I love mine. Have a nice day,
Jason
