From what I found out with research so far the S14 DET isn't the best choice for future upgrades and ease of install due to the VVL and it also being a low port engine. Is this true?

If so I should stick with either a redtop or blacktop, highport S13 DET right? Now then, is it safe to assume that a blacktop, highports would come from newer cars than those that are redtops? If not, then is there any real difference between these two engines? They both have the same turbos from what I've found. Only the S14 has a t28.

Can this information be verified by someone who knows? :)

Thanks a million

Ben

Ben Heres a quick breakdown, anybody feel free to ad anything I dont cover:

If you own an S14, then the best engine to use would be an S14 DET. Same with the S13....use an S13 engine.

If you own an S14 and use a red top S13, than you will no longer have A/C, I think you can get it to work with some of the newer S13 black tops (not positive though). Some people have been able to get it to work by using their S13 det comp to run the engine, then using there KA ecu and lower harness to run the A/C.

Redtops=older
Blacktops=newer

I think the S14's still had a T25 and the VVL is where the extra 20hp came from. S15's I believe are the ones with the T28's.

Also, if you havnt bought a 240sx yet, then try and buy a 91+ model. The earlier 240's are a little harder to do the swap on, because they came with SOHC engines and there instrument panels are different.

So now my question is, does there exist an S14 (blacktop I would assume), high port, non VVL engine that will allow me to keep my A/C easily (bolt right on). This would all be happening with a '98 240, by the way.

Also, next question. Is there EGR and AIV on these RWD DET's?? And are there O2 sensor complications?

Thanks a million to anyone who kicks me down some K-nowledge!

Thanks a million to anyone who kicks me down some K-nowledge! I think the S13 black tops go up to 1998. Those might work those might work with your A/C.

The only balck top that came in the S14 are the low port VVL engines.

Yes there is a AIV, but no EGR on S13's. S14's Im not sure about. But on S13 you can remove the AIV w/o ecu complications.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! On the FWD DET's, there is no EGR OR AIV. I hate dealing with those systems. They complicate the whole vacuum line system. I'll have no trouble doing away with the AIV, if for no other reason than to clean the engine bay up

Thank you!

The S14 motor has a T28. It is easier to do the same motor as chassis. Redtop S13's are from 90-93 and blacktop are 94-98 and are low port with no difference between red and black. S14's are 94-98 and are highport with vvl. If your only going to do minor mods then I would stick with S14. It's just when you do cam gears it kinda does away with the vvl. Most of the high horsepower cars use low port S13 motors as the base.

No, that's not right.

Red top S13: 89-90
black top S13: 91-94
Black top S14: 95-98
Black top S15: 99-

It really comes down to going with the same generation for an easier swap.

As Bmoses and I were talking, it's cheaper to go with a complete front clip in that you get all of the stock IC piping and wiring. Granted, this isn't the way to make big HP, but for a starting point, using all of the factory stuff will make it easier...plus, you can really say, "It's stock, I swear!" :D

Well actually it's
88-89 S13's used CA's
90-93 S13's used SR redtops
94-98 180's used SR blacktops
94-98 S14's used SR blacktops w/vvl
99 up S15's used SR blacktops w/vvl

Easy there buddy :)

I'm glad that TX180SX came back with a correction. It actually makes sense as to why there seemed to be an overlap between the red top and black top or the fact that the two even existed.

Thanks!
