this was one of my worst weekends, saturday im at the track, and break an axle, luckily i had a spare so i was able to swap it and drive home, sunday on my first time run just as i launch theres a loud clack sound, i thought the gear popped out or something but then i notice its not that and pulled over to the side, i got out the car a saw a stream of oil from the starting line to my car, i look under and oil is just pouring out of the tranny, finally get towed back to the pits, jacked the car up and theres a gaping hole where the shift linkage goes in
i couldnt believe it broke, im all motor and the webbing was welded
time to rebuild

Yes. Coming out the watewbox and pulling out the gate that VHT is waaaay to damn sticky for a fairly stock suspension. The wheelhop, geesh! I have bad memories.

Yea my buddy matt (planoser) broke one in the same place as you at the strip. Knocked about a fist sized hole in it in the same place. It was ugly. I'll se if I can get him to post the pics again.

What can be done to increase that particular point in the tranny? If it is a common problem it may be worth checkin into before the case cracks.
Is that common for the FWD tranny only, or is that RWD also?

It is extremely common. You guys must not be on the SE-R list or have been on this forum long. There is a weakness right there at the half moon where the axle goes in. It WILL happen if you have a lot of wheel hop.
I had mine welded. Here are pics:

No one who has had one welded to my knowledge has ever had it crack. You can also use JB Weld. Jamie Farrer used JB weld on his tranny with no problems (SR20 Full Drag car, 500whp)
