: 54C SR20DET rebuild
vizi0n 02-08-2008, 03:48 PM Hi all,
I'm seeking advice for my rebuild. I have posted on a few forums but answers vary from one place to another. What do you guys think?
I have so far:
202-6005 - ARP connecting rod bolts
202-4303 - ARP head bolts
10101-54C26 - Engine gasket kit
13500-54C00 - Oil pump
21010-54C00 - Water pump
13028-53J03 - Timing chain
13070-53J03 - Tensionner
30531-03E10 - Clutch lever
30534-03E00 - Clutch lever spring retainer
30542-03E10 - Clutch lever dust cover
11140-54C00 - Oil dip stick
Still unsure:
CP Pistons, but 86.5mm or 87mm? 8.5:1 or 9:1?
Metal head gasket - Cometic, A'PEXi, HKS, Tomei, what brand?
Also ordering a new clutch kit from ACT (Sprung 6 pucks, XT pressure plate)
I plan on running 14psi on the stock turbo for now. Got any suggestions? Especially on the head as I don't know shit about head jobs. Springs? Retainers? What else would you suggest.
Low612 02-08-2008, 05:35 PM cometic hg
vizi0n 02-08-2008, 05:37 PM I've heard bad things about Cometic, are they that good? And what thickness would you go
boostem 02-08-2008, 05:45 PM i have tried cometic head gasket and it sucks. just used a new gtir oem gasket... works perfectly....
also use 86.5mm pistons and 9.1:1 compression...
don't use arp headstuds....use the oem headstuds
gti-r93 02-08-2008, 07:06 PM try the cometic phuzion, it use gas filled o-ring that expand with more heat that create more and more pressure to seal.
vizi0n 02-10-2008, 12:27 AM I think I'll get a Tomei.
Just wondering, how do I calculate the thickness I need? What's stock thickness
TREYDEE 02-10-2008, 01:00 AM Get a sr20ve water pump courtesyparts.com has them for 39.99 part# 21010-sr20ve, ditch the ARP head studs,Factoty head studs and gasket work great and cost less.I'd also get a VE oil pump and pullie, if your running *** stock turbo a Heavy Duty ACT pressure plate will be fine.
veilside180sx 02-10-2008, 01:11 AM Apexi, Cosworth, or PE. Don't touch any other HG besides those.
Cometic's were tested worse than a stock headgasket.

Thanks but I'm getting a GTI-R water pump and GTI-R oil pump at a local Nissan dealer and its cheaper then getting them from Courtesy. Factory head gasket will most likely leak with rised compression/boost. And a heavy duty ACT clutch is going to slip as it's good for a maximum of 308 ft/lbs of torque which I get pretty close by only upping the boost to 14psi. Add the larger pistons, 3" downpipe, more fuel and you cross the 308 line). The XT is good for 414 ft/lbs which more suits my needs.

Thanks, I won't touch Cometic even with a 10' stick then
vizi0n 02-17-2008, 04:48 PM Just wondering, does it matter if the head gasket has 88mm bores and I use 86.5mm pistons?
Master_Sentra 02-26-2008, 08:04 PM bump,
have the same question.
Saludos,
veilside180sx 02-26-2008, 08:08 PM I used an Cosworth 87mm headgasket on my 86.5 bore.
CanadianR 03-30-2008, 09:14 PM frank, there's a thread on gtiroc.com showing which headgaskets are tops.
cometic is garbage, then the oem one, then the cosworth and hks/tomei ones are the leaders.
vizi0n 03-30-2008, 09:19 PM Hey there! Well I've made my choice and I'm going with the Tomei 1.2mm
vesssh 03-31-2008, 07:21 AM what pistons did you end up going for? 8:5 or 9:1?
andreagti-r 08-20-2009, 04:45 PM anyone have tryed to fit a cosworth sr20det metal head gasket on his gti-r engine?
GTiRlover 08-25-2009, 05:17 PM vizi0n- what 3" downpipe are you using? Got any pics because I need a new downpipe for my car...
mazworxsales 08-27-2009, 11:31 AM Apexi works good. But just make sure you open up the holes as most of these gaskets are 11mm and the GTi-R are 12mm

AM Performance from Australia. If I remember correctly it was about 450$CAD or so 2 years ago.
You can see some photos at http://www.vizi0n.com/pulsar/downpipe/
